Celebrities Swear By These Beauty Products—So I Put Them to the Test

When a celebrity raves about a beauty product, I’m first in line to try. I’m typically a skeptic, refusing to believe something could be that much better than the items I’ve tried previously. But when recommendations stack up, I can’t help but need to get my hands on it. Celebrities have a unique take on beauty products: they’re often working with the best and brightest on their skin, hair, and makeup; they need products that work on camera and off, and they’re also mostly amateurs too—if a product is fussy, they’re not likely dealing with it. Basically, celebs are just like us, just with access to experts and thousands of dollars to spend on their beauty rituals.

I’m constantly researching celebrity favorite beauty products (both for my day job and as an expensive hobby), so it was only in due time that I’d start incorporating some of them into my routine to see if they’re actually worth the hype (and the high price tag).

Tatcha

The Camellia Cleansing Oil

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Halima Aden, Doja Cat

Celebrities need a luxurious, deep cleansing oil maybe more than the rest of us. All that makeup has to come off somehow. I finished off one of these cleansing oils and have been sitting on repurchasing for a while because it's a bit of a splurge, but it's so lovely to use and made me actually excited to take my makeup off at the end of the day. It made my skin feel soft and supple and removed every stitch of makeup—without giving me cloudy eyes.

iS Clinical

Cleansing Complex

Celebs who love it: Debra Messing, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tamera Mowry

My dermatologist recommended this to me endlessly, but it was seeing Rosie Huntington-Whitely use it that finally broke me down to buy it. Until this, I had never saw the importance of splurging on a cleanser. I used the CeraVe cleanser every beauty blogger told me to buy and went on my merry way. This is ideal for someone with acne-prone or oily skin who's been burned by other acne cleansers that dried out their skin, because this somehow is deeply cleansing without stripping. It keeps acne at bay with a little bit of salicylic acid. I think this cleanser is fantastic, but I prefer Avene’s gel cleanser for half the price.

Biologique Recherche

Lotion P50 Exfoliating Toner

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Chriselle Lim, Tayshia Adams

With this toner, I see why celebrities have good skin. P50 is an exfoliating liquid that really follows the age-old adage "it gets worse before it gets better." My skin looked atrocious the first few nights I used P50 (red, splotchy, broken out), but once that went away, it revealed brighter, smoother, softer skin I never knew I could see. It smells like feet, but I'll take it.

Caudalie

Instant Detox Mask

Celebs who love it: Kourtney Kardashian, Danielle Brooks, Precious Lee

After seeing this mask blow up on TikTok, I picked it up at a rare time it was in stock, and now I can't live without it. Unlike other clay masks, this doesn't leave my skin feeling tight and waxy; it removes all the gunk from my pores without sacrificing my glow. I use it about a once a week in the evenings, and it's made such a difference in the clogged pores and blackheads on my nose. They're fewer and farther between since I started using this, and it helps clear and heal when I do have some.

La Mer

Moisturizing Soft Cream

Celebs who love it: Megan thee Stallion, Nina Dobrev, Kelsey Merritt

I indulged in the ultimate splurge last spring when I picked up a mini of this on a whim during my first in-store shopping excursion post-vaccine (oh, the days!). If the beauty industry can wear you down on one thing, it’s convincing you that La Mer’s moisturizing products are a 10/10. I used it a few times and quickly walked myself back to the store to return it. This is lovely and luxurious, for sure, but is it worth the high price? Not for me. I wanted something viscous and thick that would seal in everything at the end of my skincare routine and make my skin look plump and moisturized, and this just isn't that. It's lightweight and thinner than I wanted, so it doesn't provide that deep moisture I was looking for. Ultimately, I ended up with Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore, which solved every problem for about half the price.

Armani Beauty

Luminous Silk Foundation

Celebs who love it: Lori Harvey, Barbara Palvin, Palmona Elsesser

We all have that product… you know, the one you try once and immediately know you’ll be indebted to paying that price tag until you die. For me, it’s Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk. I’ll eat the cost of this magic foundation as long as I’m around, and I won’t complain even a bit. Luminous Silk is unlike any other foundation I’ve ever tried. While “luminous” is in the name, it has a natural, skinlike finish that tows the perfectly-balanced line of being dewy without looking oily or unnatural. It has a buildable medium coverage that looks flawless when my skin is in good shape or when I’m suffering with a bad hormonal breakout. It never clings to dry patches, stays all day, and always has a shade that matches my olive undertones. The celebs got it right with this one.

Fenty Beauty

Instant Warmth Bronzer

Celebs who love it: Madison Beer, Cynthia Erivo, Doja Cat

Everyone needs a blendable, smooth bronzer in their collection that they can always count on, and Fenty Beauty's is mine (and apparently a few others' too). I know if I pack this for a trip, I can count on it to make me look sunkissed in a very natural way. I use a big, fluffy brush to apply it to the perimeter of my face, and it really just makes me look like I have a slight tan. The undertones and shades in this bronzer cover just about every skin tone, but it's Fenty, so who's surprised? I've hit pan on this and will have this in my collection for a long time.

Laura Mercier

Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Celebs who love it: Saweetie, Jhené Aiko, Doja Cat

Laura Mercier's classic setting powder will forever reign supreme, and the celebs agree. It's a lightweight, natural-looking powder that's blurring and smoothing on the skin. It makes your makeup last double the length it would without it and looks good when my skin is dry or oily. I especially love that this comes in a few different shades, because we all know “translucent” isn’t translucent on everyone. On my medium skin tone, the “honey” shade blends away naturally without making me look grey and washed out.

Olaplex

No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme

Celebs who love it: Leslie Grace, Addison Rae, Camila Mendes

It wasn’t this product alone that nursed my damaged, broken, straggly hair back to life, but I’d give this about 75 percent of the credit. Olaplex contains a proprietary formula that strengthens, repairs, and smooths the bonds in your hair from the inside out, so your doesn't just look healthier, it is. If you're dying your hair often, using lots of heat, or spending a long time in the sun (celebrities are guilty of all three), this repairing leave-in conditioner will cure all that damage and prevent it from getting worse. It's lightweight on your hair, and you only need the tiniest amount, so this container lasts truly forever.
