May 2018

When you find that perfect makeup product, it’s hard not to shout your elation from the rooftops. I’m talking about a product that meets all your needs: flawless finish, affordable price, long-wearing but easy to remove, and most of all (at least for me) — versatile.

Because I love makeup, the amount I apply depends on my mood. There are days when I want to go full-glam with a giant housewife strip lash and days when I want no-makeup makeup (and others that fall somewhere in between). Since I can’t spend half my earnings at Sephora ðŸ’”, the products I have need to create all levels of glam and by the time I finish the bottle, it’s a requirement that I feel desperate without it. If I can do without, it’s time to look for something new.

Sephora is truly my one-stop-shop for all things beauty. Many of my favorites are even exclusive to them — so really, why go anywhere else?! After years of searching and testing their products, I wanted to share a few makeup go-tos that have never let me down in creating a flawless look.

FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA

Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

Oh let me count the million ways I love this foundation. First of all: the array of shades is amazing. There's a shade and undertone for every complexion. I think this might be the only foundation that truly wears like my skin color.

I've tried a few foundations, but once I find one that I love, I will stick with it. And for a long time I loved Makeup Forever foundation. And while I still do love that foundation, I haven't bought it since the launch of Fenty. Why? Fenty is a truly buildable foundation meaning you can use it on days when you want light coverage AND on days when you want full-blown glam. I use to hold on to two foundations depending on my makeup level for that day and not only was it expensive, it was a lot to tote around.

Fenty changed all of that with it's creamy, buildable formula so I can have any level of coverage that lasts ALL DAY.

BEAUTYBLENDER

the original beautyblender

If you think your makeup comes off a little heavy handed or your foundation sits cakey, then I know you aren't using a beautyblender. I will sing the praises of this makeup sponge until the day I die. You can use it with almost any product but the best way to use it is for flawless, dewy foundation and concealer application. It's by far the most used tool in my bag. I love it so much that I even wash it weekly and am never without at least one backup.

*for all my friends who aren’t sure how to use a beauty blender or they just “don’t get the big deal,” here is an intro video that shows you a small fraction of what you can be doing with it and how to use it. Now go forth and put your foundation on correctly. PLEASE. I BEG YOU.

NARS

Radiant Creamy Concealer

I've used this concealer for three years and even after trying others, like Fenty this is a buildable product that can apply a little coverage for normal days and full blown under eye brightening for when you really want to go bold. I also use it to highlight so I stick with a color that is one to two shades lighter than my foundation.

KAT VON D

Shade + Light Face Contour Palette

Whether an amateur or pro at contouring your face, this palette is a must-have for your arsenal. The range of shades can aid in any level of glam or shade of skin. And the formula is long-lasting without being drying so you know your hard work will stay all day long

The best part is if you tend to use one or two of the shades more often, you can purchase refillable inserts for those.

Laura Mercier

Translucent Loose Setting Powder

This cult favorite product can be used multiple ways in your routine. My favorites are to avoid fallout from your eyeshadow. Have you ever done your eyes only to look like a raccoon from all the little sprinkles falling below your lash line? And you try to get them off but it just makes he situation worse? A light dusting of Setting Powder before you start your eyes will keep any fallout from sticking. Brush it away when you're ready to apply eyeliner and all you'll see is clean, bright undereyes. I also love to use it to "bake" and carve out a sleek contour.

And not to sound like a broken record, but this is yet another place to use your beautyblender. #justsaying

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS

Brow Wiz

No one does brows quite like Anastasia. From gel to pomade, her products reign supreme in the brow world. The most used and versatile product has to be her Brow Wiz. The retractable crayon has a fine, natural tip so you can recreate light hair-like strokes for a natural brow. The opposite end has a spoolie so you can brush and shape as you fill in without ever having to change hands.

I once read that to achieve the most natural brow look possible, Kim Kardashian's makeup artist uses two shades on her brows. A darker one for the tail of the brow and a lighter one for the center forward. I now keep two brown shades of brow wiz in my bag and can fully back this tip.

Summary: If you're using one brow product, it needs to be this.

HUDA BEAUTY

Desert Dusk Eyeshadow Palette

Gone are the days of purchasing single eyeshadow colors. I mean... you still can but why would you when so many beautiful palettes are on the market. Our new favorite for summer? The Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Eyeshadow palette. I love the warm orange tones that bring a pop to any skin tone and eye color. The glitter shades allow for a little pop at night.

And if you're hesitant of the bright colors, I beg you to try them. Makeup is about having fun and experimenting. And while I love a good brown eyeshadow look, it's never a bad idea to experiment with your look and take a risk. Plus Sephora makes it easy with their 100% satisfaction guarantee. They will take any product you've used but not loved back within 60 days.

Tattoo Liner

Tattoo Liner

A cat eye line CAN be effortless and easy, but only with this liquid liner. The tip makes it so easy to do a natural flick and you won't even need to clean it up with concealer. The formula is also long-lasting so you won't have to worry about your flick melting down your cheek throughout the day.

On the flip side, this eyeliner is easy to remove and doesn't require heavy scrubbing or multiple products to full take off. I really appreciate that in a long lasting eye product because the last thing I want to do at the end of the day is scrub my eye forcefully or feel like I still have makeup crusted on to my lid.

MARC JACOBS BEAUTY

Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner

If a winged eye is not in your repertoire, let me introduce you to this Marc Jacobs gel crayon. The formula is truly a combination of liquid and pencil, so it glides on creamy and never dries out, but still gives the look of a pencil and can be smudged depending on the look. With satin, matte, and shimmer finishes you're sure to find the perfect one for your routine.

My favorite? The satin finish black.

TOO FACED

Better Than Sex Mascara

HOLY GRAIL MASCARA RIGHT HERE. There is nothing else to even say other than it is the best mascara that ever was and frankly, it lives up to its name.

To get the best look, curl your lashes and then start at the base by wiggling slightly before you pull it through to the ends of your lashes. Repeat a few times for ultimate drama.

SEPHORA COLLECTION

#Lipstories Lipstick, Brunch Date

If you want an $8 lipstick that feels way more expensive, this is it. I love that I can purchase a few (without stressing about the cost) and then layer on for a custom color. I always do this with nude or natural lipsticks so I can get the perfect shade.

SEPHORA COLLECTION

#Lipstories Lipstick, Popsicle Lips

Everyone needs a good, hydrating red lipstick in their arsenal. A pop of red can transform your entire look and it's my go-to for pepping up any look. This shade is the perfect middle ground between a bright orange red and a deep sultry blue red.

Also, you just can't beat that drugstore price with Sephora quality.

Committing to a workout regimen is no easy feat – you have to conquer finding a cute fitness outfit, finding a class or routine you enjoy, and squeezing in the time to commit to said workout. However, your hair can throw a wrench in your plans, especially when you have somewhere to be and can’t take the time to fully shower.

Luckily, modern science is on our side and has equipped us with tricks and tools to keep our hair neat and polished after the sweatiest of workouts. Follow along below!

Heavy Sweat Workouts – Spinning, Hot Yoga, etc.

Pre-Workout

These tough workouts give you a great burn, but require a little more prep before class. Start with a style that keeps your hair completely out of your face – for thick haired girls, use one hairband to create a tight ponytail at the top of your head, and then a second to twist into a bun. Using dry shampoo before class and brushing through thoroughly will allow for a dry base to start soaking up oil and sweat before you even begin. The Everygirl team is a big fan of invisibobble hair bands because we can secure our hair without the fear of creases.

Post-Workout

If you can’t jump in a shower after class but have hair that is beyond sweaty, a quick dunk in some water with a little massaging will do the trick. It helps to remove some of the sweat, and give you a wet base. From there, partially dry your hair and whip into a low bun for work, or spritz with a little wave spray and dry/style as necessary. If you don’t mind running out with wet hair, the dunk-and-go method helps to take some of the ickiness out of your locks post-class.

Medium Sweat Workouts – Barre, Running, etc.

Pre-Workout

Depending on the workout, a tight ponytail works great for when you need to keep your hair out of your face. For added style, throw your ponytail into a sleek braid or add a headband to keep flyaways away from your forehead.

Post-Workout

Again, hair accessory is your best friend in this case – a blow dryer (on a medium, warm/hot setting) can help remove a good portion of the sweat left from your workout, after toweling off. Once your hair is to your preferred dryness, spritz with dry shampoo (in the dry portions!) and style as needed.

Light Sweat Workouts – Weight Lifting, etc.

Pre-Workout

Naturally, these workouts lend themselves best to true styling post-class. These workouts perform best with a single or double Dutch braid (depending on the layers you have), with a dry shampoo spritz before you begin.

Post-Workout

Blow dry if needed, and release the braids for loose waves. Comb through to keep loosening them up around the hairline. Easy run-and-go hair!

What if I told you that the best way to preserve your youthful complexion was completely free? You’d probably search the immediate vicinity for any potential gas leaks, because who in their right mind would say such a thing? I mean, a quick scan of the skincare section of Sephora would immediately refute this insane statement, right?

Surprisingly enough, it’s actually true. Models know it, actresses know it, plastic surgeons and dermatologists know it, and now you will soon be in possession of this elusive missing piece in the puzzle that comprises the Fountain of Youth. While it might be free, it might not be an easy adjustment to make — but mastering it can benefit your entire body, not just your skin.

Make the switch

Here’s the big secret: sleep on your back. That’s it. Sleeping on your back has a multitude of benefits for your skin and much more; if you can work through the initial discomfort of training yourself into a new sleeping position, you’ll see improvements in your body well past the appearance of your skin.

Sleeping on your back aligns your body into its most natural resting position devoid of any spinal contortions, alleviating pressure on your neck, lower back, and internal organs by evenly distributing your body weight. If you’re lying flat, or with a pillow under your knees to support your lower back and hips, your lungs are able to expand and contract fully while you sleep, and the other vital organs in your body are given space to rest and regenerate properly.

The pressure that your sleeping position puts on various parts of your body can cause stress on your organs and spine and, most noticeably, your skin. Aside from all the benefits that back sleeping has for your whole body, sleeping on your side or stomach is probably aging your skin faster and might be the culprit behind your breakouts, redness, and irritation.

Why it matters for your skin

The concept of “beauty sleep” has often been referred to as the amount of sleep you get consistently each night — we accept that we should get between 7 to 8 hours of rest in order to be in tip top shape. However, your sleeping position has just as much of an impact on your skin as getting adequate rest each night.

Unless you’re washing your pillow cases every single night, they are a breeding ground of trouble for your skin. Between your hair products, sweat, and leftover skincare that transfers onto your pillowcases each night, you’re continuously pressing your skin against bacteria and pore-clogging agents. Combining comedogenic hair products and sweat with friction and constant pressure — you’re setting your skin up for major irritation.

Sleeping on your stomach or side means your skin is being pressed against wrinkled fabric all night. If you’ve ever woken up with imprints from your pillows or sheets on your face, you’re seeing what eventually will be real fine lines and wrinkles on your face if you continue to sleep this way. Pressure and heating up the skin allows for collagen to break down quicker, and applying unnatural positioning of the muscles in your face and neck will weaken them over time.

Additionally, sleeping on your back allows for proper lymphatic drainage throughout the night. If you wake up with puffy eyes or swollen red cheeks, or any redness for that matter, changing the way you sleep will correct the problem of fluid retention.

How to do it

Despite being the healthiest sleeping position, sleeping on your back hardly feels natural to most people. It is entirely possible to train yourself into being a back sleeper; you just have to be a little patient with the process. Here are a few pointers to help get you started, as well as some of our favorite sleep products.

If your head feels unsupported at first without being up against your pillow, try sleeping on an incline by stacking your pillows to support not only your head up higher but also your upper torso. If you still find it difficult, roll up a t-shirt or sweater into a small support pillow and place it next to the side of your face you would normally sleep on.

If you experience tightness or pain in your lower back, place a pillow behind your knees to create more support for your lower vertebrae. It’s also helpful to stretch a little before hopping into bed so that you can loosen up your hamstrings and hip flexors — both are likely to be stiff if you work from a desk. Don’t stress about doing a full body stretch, just get into downward dog for a minute or two and stretch out your calves, ankles, hips, and lower back.
