June 2020

A few weeks before we began isolating due to COVID-19, I placed an Ulta order for some products that I thought would be perfect for my summertime makeup goal: dewy, glowing skin that gives off that model-off-duty vibe. Obviously, things have changed since then, and I put makeup on maybe three times throughout quarantine.

But if we’re looking at the silver linings of spending a few months in isolation, one of mine was that I was able to spend the time to really commit to figuring out a skincare routine that works for me, and get my skin glowing and ready for summer. I’ve nailed down a routine that includes a few staple products that really work for me. These four basic steps—and products that clear up, hydrate, and bronze—are perfect for achieving glowing skin all summer:

1. Take care of any problem areas

It’s really important to me to start with the best possible base before I apply any bronzing products or makeup so that I truly have a clean canvas and can wear as little product as possible. The main issues I have when it comes to my skin are a few breakouts here and there, uneven texture, and a skin condition called keratosis pilaris (small red bumps caused by keratin buildup) on my arms. The condition is chronic, so it will never fully go away, but I have discovered a few things that reduce inflammation and the appearance of the bumps. Overall, these four products have been my saving graces when it comes to clearing up any problem areas on my skin.

The Ordinary

AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

This product is so popular for a good reason. After only a few uses, I noticed improvement in the texture of my skin and reduction of dark spots from previous breakouts!

Rosen Skincare

Break-Out

A good spot corrector is definitely necessary in keeping my skin looking its best. I love that it can significantly shrink any incoming zits, but also help reduce my dark spots.

First Aid Beauty

KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA

As mentioned, I have keratosis pilaris on my arms. This body scrub, combined with the CeraVe SA Cream, helps to reduce inflammation and leave my skin looking smoother (therefore a making it better canvas for self-tanning!).

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

I have pretty dry skin (especially after going through drearily long Chicago winters), so I am always intrigued by any product that promises me hydration. Hydrating products are particularly great in helping achieve that natural glow that I love to sport all summer long. I’ve figured out which products—from cleansers to serums—that really help my skin stay moisturized all day.

The Ordinary

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

Hyaluronic acid has been one of the most significant introductions to my skincare routine. It truly hydrates more than any other product that I've tried.

Glossier

Future Dew

If I'm not wearing any makeup, this oil-serum hybrid is the KEY to dewy skin (it also works great with makeup). It has nourishing oils and plant-based extracts that brighten and moisturize your skin.

3. Get your bronze on

Nothing says summer quite like beautifully glowing and bronze-y skin. I’ve really only recently delved into the world of regular self-tanning at home, and I can definitely say I won’t be going back. Having a little bit of a tan makes me feel more like myself and more confident, especially during these past few months of isolation. It’s also great for evening out skin tone and giving a little bit of all-day glow. I have been regularly self-tanning my body, and I use bronzing face drops when I need a little extra something.

Tanologist

Self Tan Water

After our beauty guru Beth recommended this self tan water as an amazing affordable option, I knew I needed to try it. I love that it's clear (less staining), it creates a natural-looking tan, and it doesn't have a bad odor!

B.tan

Tanning Mitt

I love this mitt because it is a super soft, thick material—as opposed to the cheap-feeling material that tanning mitts are usually made out of—so it's gentle on the skin and feels like it will last a long time.

4. Dewy makeup products

As I mentioned, I really try to create a great base and natural glow so I don’t have to wear a ton of makeup, but when I do, I love hydrating and/or cream products that create a dewy look. Don’t get me wrong, I also love a full face of glam sometimes, but these products (in addition to a few other easy makeup routine staples) are amazing for an everyday natural look.

Colourpop

Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Acid Tinted Moisturizer

When I saw this line of products formulated with hyaluronic acid from Colourpop, I had to purchase a few immediately. This tinted moisturizer has been my go-to for when I want a little bit of coverage all over my face.

Fenty Beauty

Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Bronzer

I've tried a few cream bronzers in the past, and I never was a huge fan. I changed my mind when I tried this one from Fenty's new line of cream products. It's natural, easy to blend, and gives you the perfect bronze-y, contoured look—what more could you want?!

I love the idea of clean beauty, but I find all of the terminology a bit confusing since there are so many buzzwords smacked on product packaging with little regulation here in the U.S. Natural, organic, non-toxic, clean, etc. can mean different things to each brand. So, before adding brands to this list, I took the time to read through each company’s mission statement and ingredients list to ensure they lined up.

Essentially, “clean beauty” means that the line is generally non-toxic, environmentally conscious, and uses plant-based ingredients. I am a firm believer in balance, but I also understand that making the switch to clean products can be a budget buster, so if you find one product you want to switch, fantastic. If you don’t, that’s fine too!

I may love beauty, but I am not an expert on the clean beauty space. I am still learning just like the rest of you. Next time you have a product empty, try replacing it with a product from one of these clean-beauty businesses.

Hello! 👋🏾 ⠀ I would like to introduce myself to everyone new here. I’m Lesley Thornton, a licensed esthetician and the founder of Klur.co ⠀ Klur is an eco-inclusive skin and personal care brand based in Los Angeles, CA. ⠀ I started Klur as a facial studio, and for nearly a decade, I specialized in natural and non-toxic facial treatments. I learned that the best results were achieved when nature and science were combined to work in harmony. ⠀ With expert training and hands-on experience, I was able to document the effects of various ingredients and formulations on diverse skin. Unknowingly, I was gathering research data for the product line, which was the foundation of what Klur has become today. ⠀ While I’m no longer treating clients, my sole focus is continuing to create products, so that I can reach more people who can experience the same level of results and enjoyment through our formulations. ⠀ I am thrilled to continue to share and build with you all, and I have many things in the works for the future. ⠀ -Lesley ✌🏾🌎 ~📷 @susannekindt

I have used Klur since February, and it is now one of my favorite brands of all time. The packaging is luxe (and sustainable), and the products just work. Among my favorites are the Gentle Matter daily cleanser, which doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin, and the Elements of Comfort body oil that I apply before bed when I feel anxious or can’t sleep.

2. Native Atlas

Using non-toxic, plant-derived ingredients, this skincare brand shares its ingredients profile with its customers to ensure brand transparency. Whether you need a bath soak or a new makeup remover, they’ve got something for everyone.

Beauty starts from the inside out, and this Brooklyn-born company’s superfood latte blends will help you get your day started without the caffeine jitters with their Turmeric-based blends.

4. Ilia Beauty

Ilia beauty was also introduced to me this year. Their silicone-free, fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic skin tint made me trade in my tried-and-true tinted moisturizer. I think their color range could use some diversifying, but with their recent commitment to Pull Up For Change, I hope we see some changes soon.

Ranavat is a small but mighty line of skin and hair care products inspired by Ayurvedic beauty rituals. Many products in this line are made with anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric root, rose, and saffron, which is a plus for any skin type. My go-to product is the Radiant Rani Illuminating Botanical Serum because it lives up to its name.
