March 2021

With constantly wearing a mask and living in a polar vortex-type climate, my skin hasn’t been very happy. It’s dry, flaky, and plagued by maskne. I’ve been in search of a product that would bring back the glowy skin that I assumed was only attainable from a bit of sun and a COVID-free lifestyle. Well, I was wrong.

About a month ago, I discovered the Sakara Life Water Detox drops from a super-targeted Instagram ad. After a bit of research, I discovered that the drops are basically a highly-concentrated liquid form of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants like spinach. As far as research goes, studies have found that topical chlorophyll can decrease acne and help with wound healing, and liquid chlorophyll can act as a sort of digestible deodorant, reducing body odor like bad breath and sweat. However, most benefits the dark green, almost black concoction boasts—like flushing out toxins, promoting gut health, improving immunity, and making you glow from the inside out—need more scientific research to fully back them up.

Similar to a probiotic supplement, this product promotes healthy bacteria to ensure regular digestion naturally. Ultimately, you are consuming some of the benefits of eating greens like spinach just by drinking water with a few drops of this liquid.

After reading about all of the benefits and tons of glowing reviews, I decided to give the product a try. Upon its arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to find you get two vials of the drops. I thought I was shelling out 40 bucks plus shipping and handling for just one tiny bottle, but luckily, it contains 4 fl. oz. worth of product total.

After examining the product and reading through the info cards included, I was nervous. While most of the reviews claimed no-taste, I had seen a few that said it was mineral-y tasting, whatever that means. So for my first test, I filled my tumbler with ice-cold Brita water, a single dropper of the grass-colored liquid, and the juice of a large lemon to mask the inevitably disgusting flavor I feared. Well, all I tasted was lemon. And on my next try, I was feeling a bit braver. So I did water, chlorophyll, no lemon. You’ll be happy to know there was absolutely no taste, just good old water.

Now that we have the taste issue out of the way, it’s time to discuss the effects. I have gone through one bottle of these drops over the past month. On average, I use somewhere between one and five drops a day, honestly depending on how often I remember to add them to my water. I’m honestly surprised to say I saw several skin-related results from this product. First of all, I currently live in Chicago where the climate is less than ideal, and my skin takes the effects pretty hard. My face gets dry and cracky, and my hands often show signs of what I believe to be eczema. After a week of using these drops, I could almost feel my skin being hydrated from the inside out. My makeup applied so much smoother without any flaking, and the patches on the back of my hands were clearing up. I will say this product promotes me to drink much more water, probably double what I was consuming before. Every time I take a sip, I’m thinking, “Oh, this is good for me,” so I’m sure the extra H20 has been helping as well!

I also noticed fewer breakouts. I’ve been dealing with my new enemy, maskne, but when drinking my grass water, I began to see fewer whiteheads popping up. And I will say, when I didn’t drink the detox water for about a week, I saw my skin flare up again. Safe to say, I am a believer.

I’d also like to point out the most unexpected outcome I’ve had from this product and perhaps my favorite. This is the hangover cure to beat all hangovers—seriously! I must preface this by saying I am a 22-year-old woman who likes to go to bed by 10 p.m., so my lifestyle doesn’t warrant excessive drinking. I enjoy a cocktail or two on weekends and Zoom happy hours. But thanks to the pandemic, my tolerance has been hit harder than I would have expected.

One night (pre-detox drops), I had a mere two glasses of red wine and woke up with a fuzzy hangover headache… not ideal. A few weeks later, I indulged in two margaritas. Before I got into bed, I forced myself to chug a large glass of water and doctored it up with three whole squeezes of the chlorophyll drops. I woke up refreshed, sans headache, and my skin looked so supple! Since this product is meant to flush out toxins, its use as a hangover remedy checks out.

Overall, these green drops definitely changed my skin for the better. Whether because they forced me to drink more water, I had a bit of added hydration, or they were flushing out bodily toxins, my skin looked fresher, more supple, and maskne free. And I can’t help but recommend this as a must-have after consuming alcohol. Thank me later!

The #1 thing I’ve missed since the beginning of the pandemic is leisurely strolling through a store. Even when I’ve been strapped for cash, there’s nothing I enjoy more than waltzing through my favorite stores. I’d leave the office at 5 on the dot to walk down Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, stopping in anywhere that tickled my fancy (which was usually the likes of Sephora, Ulta, Levi’s, H&M, Neiman Marcus, perhaps a glance at Louis Vuitton, who’s to say!). But these trips were always better with a friend; a time during which we could share recommendations, laugh at all the weird things we see (it was once bucket hats, which I’ve admittedly begun wearing, so jokes on me), and buy things just because someone else enabled us to.

What better friend to go on a pretend shopping date with than the Duchess of Sussex? I love Meghan more than ever right now, and I’m sure we’d have a blast sharing favorites and talking beauty for hours on end. But while I wait for her to respond to my DM, I figured I’d share the products I’d recommend to her (since she’s definitely wondering) if we took a shared trip to Sephora. Hey Meg, if you pick any of these up, HMU!

MERIT

The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick

This new product was practically made for Meghan and was the first thing I thought for this list. Meghan has said before that she loves YSL’s Touche Eclat concealer because it’s radiant and easy and makes her look awake even when she’s not feeling it. This product is that, but better. When you just want to cover a couple blemishes and reduce the darkness under your eyes, this blends seamlessly into any skincare or primer you have under it. Meghan has gorgeous skin, so she doesn’t “need” a foundation to cover it up; instead, this product lets her natural skin shine while making her feel a little more confident.

Danessa Myricks Beauty

Vision Flush Cheek, Eye, and Lip Color

Meghan loves a glowy cheek, and now that we’re heading into springtime, I’m sure this is on her mind now more than ever. A cream product like this one from Danessa Myricks (a long-time favorite brand of mine that just launched at Sephora) adds a touch of color without adding texture or heaviness to the cheeks. Plus, this line carries quite the shade range, and the blushes are buildable to make it work for any skin tone.

Farmacy

Daily Greens Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer

Now that she’s back in LA, Meghan can probably get away with switching to a lighter moisturizer than what she needed in gloomy London. This oil-free moisturizer is a gel consistency, but don’t let that fool you—it’s still hydrating and soothing, even for a drier skin type. This is an ideal moisturizer for the spring and summer.

Olaplex

No. 7 Bonding Oil

Meghan has the most beautiful hair I’ve pretty much ever seen, but if she wants to take it up a notch, this is the product to do it, boasting shine; smoothness; and protection for color-treated hair, heat, and UV rays. This oil is lightweight but still ultra-moisturizing, making it ideal for most hair types. Olaplex is a miracle-worker for damaged hair, and this addition to the line is no exception. Also, this is a great oil to use if you’re going to be in the sun to protect your hair just like you do your skin! It’s also clean and in recyclable packaging, which is something I predict is a major plus for Meghan.

Grande Cosmetics

Lash Enhancing Serum

Meghan has said she swears by RevitaLash
before interviews to make her lashes a little bit longer. But I will swiftly show Meghan the results our editor experienced with GrandeLash, and I’m convinced she’ll make the switch. GrandeLash is cheaper too, so a double win!

Tatcha

The Deep Cleanse Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

Another product Meghan has discussed loving before is Tatcha’s Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder, which is a powder you mix with water to create an exfoliator. As a busy mom-of-almost-two (!), Meghan doesn’t have the time, and I know it. Instead, I’d recommend this exfoliator. It’s from a brand I already know she loves and trusts, but the product seems a little easier and even more gentle on her skin. This is a favorite amongst skincare lovers that is right up Meghan’s alley.

Saie

Dew Balm Bouncy Marshmallow Highlighter

Meghan is just about known at this point for her dewy cheekbones, so I know she’d have her eyes on a new highlighter. Meghan’s glow is always a natural dewiness rather than a shimmery powder, which means she likely loves using a cream product that gives that “lit from within” glow. This one from Saie, a newer clean beauty brand now available at Sephora, has amazing reviews saying it does exactly that: provide a natural glow that simply shows off Meghan’s complexion rather than covering it.

Maison Louis Marie

No.04 Bois de Balincourt Perfume Oil

I would die to see the perfumes lining Meghan Markle’s vanity, but in my head, she loves a woodsy, spicy scent as much as I do. Think Jazz Club by Replica, Le Labo Santal 33, Juliet Has A Gun Not A Perfume. It’s sexy and cool without being too bold. This perfume oil, which Meghan might love for its lasting power and portability, has similar vibes. Its main notes are sandalwood, vetiver, and amber wood, but it has a bit of a floral undertone too, making it ideal for warmer weather when you want this type of scent but don’t want to smell like a campfire. It’s a little different and unique for a woodsy, earthy scent, so I think this would really round out her collection.

Briogeo

Avocado & Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfoods Hair Mask

The first products I tried from Briogeo were their hair masks, and they blew me away. This is one of the newest ones in their collection, and it doesn’t disappoint if you want an ultra-moisturizing hair mask you could use once a week or every wash depending on your needs. A hair mask is a great way to treat yourself, especially for a busy mom like Meghan who likely finds a lot of solace getting those few extra minutes away in the shower. Not only is this great on hair, but the whole experience—like the scent, the packaging, the texture—is what makes it really worth it.

Fenty Skin

Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer

SPF should be on Meghan’s agenda every day, but it’s even more important as she’s spending more time in the Los Angeles sunshine. This was my favorite last summer because it made my skin look amazing even when I wasn’t wearing makeup. It has a serious glow that makes you look flawless without any other products. This is also good for anyone who’s busy because it combines your moisturizing and sunscreen step, saving you a little bit of time in your routine.

This year, The Inkey List released its brand new Succinic Acid Acne Treatment with succinic acid as its superstar ingredient. Succinic acid is not a new ingredient, but it is relatively unknown and not commonly used in skincare (hence why you’ve probably never heard of it). The Inkey List is one of my favorite brands (I can’t get enough of the hyaluronic acid serum). I appreciate the effectiveness of their products, price point, and commitment to education and transparency. When they launched this product, I remember thinking to myself, “if succinic acid is such a big deal, why is no one else talking about it?” So, I decided to dig deeper into what succinic acid is, what it is not, and if this ingredient is really the next big thing to cure all your acne woes. Plus, I tried it.

What Is The Inkey List’s Succinic Acid Acne Treatment?

This is a new product touted to clear acne blemishes fast, reduce oil levels, and prevent clogged pores. The treatment features 2 percent sulfur, 2 percent succinic acid, 1 percent salicylic acid, and 0.4 percent hyaluronic acid. To use, The Inkey List suggests applying a small amount directly onto the blemish after cleansing skin. This can be done up to three times a day, and the formula can be worn under makeup.

What is Succinic Acid?

Succinic acid is a chemical compound that naturally occurs in plant and animal tissue. According to Michelle Wong of Lab Muffin, a science educator and skincare enthusiast with a PhD in Chemistry, it is commonly used as a pH adjuster. The benefit of using succinic acid over the traditional salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide is that succinic acid is found to be more gentle and non-drying, making it a good option for sensitive or irritated skin. While The Inkey List is not the first to incorporate succinic acid into a skincare formulation, they have highlighted and marketed the ingredient in a way that is new to the skincare community.

Other products with succinic acid:

What doesn’t succinic acid do?

an acne ingredient. That’s right, succinic acid has yet to be proven as an acne-fighting ingredient and has no peer-reviewed studies done specifically on acne. So, how can The Inkey List claim this as an acne-fighting product? That’s because the treatment contains two very well-known and studied acne fighters: sulfur and salicylic acid. With the presence of sulfur and salicylic acid, it cannot be definitively said that any benefits you would get from the product are coming from the succinic acid itself. Salicylic acid is listed as the only “active ingredient” in the formulation. Without it, the product can not be legally claimed for the treatment of acne.

What does the research say about succinic acid?

Not much. The Inkey List highlights three key claims in their research of this product; however, not one of the key claims actually relates to the treatment of acne or blemishes as the product name would suggest.

  • 84 percent of people agree this product didn’t dry out skin
  • 96 percent agreed this product was gentle on the skin
  • 85 percent agreed this product was not visible under makeup

My Review

After trying The Inkey List’s Succinic Acid Acne Treatment for a few months, I would say the product is just OK. While the green-colored formula is lightweight, creamy, and easy to apply, the treatment was only occasionally effective in reducing inflammation and calming down some of my spots.

It is important to apply the treatment directly onto an active blemish only, and The Inkey List suggests you wait five minutes before applying the rest of your skincare or makeup routine. I’ll admit, I never did this. I prefer to do my skincare routine while my face is damp, and to be honest, I just don’t have the time or patience to wait. Overall, the product is not something I could consistently count on. If it did clear blemishes, it did so at an extremely slow rate which is not ideal if you have a big Zoom call in two days. Instead, I’ve switched over to Paula’s Choice BHA 9 Treatment. It comes at a price tag of $43 for just 0.3 fl oz (compared to The Inkey List $8.99 for 0.5 fl oz), but with 9 percent salicylic acid, it gets the job done–and fast! So far, it’s the best spot treatment I’ve used, and I prefer to pay more if it means I get to go to bed at night with peace of mind that whatever demons have formed on my face will not prosper against me.

Overall, succinic acid could be promising. However, a burden of proof still exists, one that The Inkey List has yet to provide.
