October 2021

I’ll be honest: I have kind of a love/hate relationship with makeup. When I’m in the mood to sit down and spend time on my makeup, I really enjoy trying out new things and experimenting with different products. However, a lot of the time, I am simply not in the mood to take on the task of putting on a full face of makeup, and I am definitely not someone who puts on makeup when I have nowhere to be. All that being said, I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to make myself look put together without trying too hard is simple: a few swipes of mascara. And since I live for a great deal, we’re talking drugstore mascaras.

There are few things I get more joy out of than strolling the aisles of Ulta or the makeup section of Target (and now that they’ve merged, I can do both at the same time). Almost all of my beauty collection is drugstore products, and I will die on the hill that mascara is one of the things you never need to splurge on because there are so many amazing affordable options.

When it comes to my lashes, they are all-around average: They’re not super long but not super short either, and I’m a brunette, so they are fairly dark. I can usually get away with just wearing mascara when my makeup is fully done rather than wearing false lashes. My #1 problem when it comes to wearing mascara is that I get residue under my eyes fairly easily, so I really need one that lasts all day and has some staying power.

Our Beauty Content Manager, Beth, and I got together to put together this list of some of the most popular drugstore mascaras—all with different types of formulas, ingredients, wands, and alleged benefits—and put them to the test. So behold, The Everygirl’s Official Drugstore Mascara Showdown:

10. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Score: 4/10
Best for: A trip down memory lane

As I’m sure it was for a large majority of the makeup-wearing people reading this, Maybelline Great Lash was my first ever mascara. It still has a bit of a cult following, so we figured that I could give it a go and see how it stands up against the test of time. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it did not hold up. The wand feels minuscule compared to what’s out today, which makes it a little awkward to apply and makes for slightly clumpy lashes. It was also the messiest and wettest formula that I tried (I put this hoodie on about 10 minutes after I applied the mascara and it smeared all over my face. Awesome) and was just as messy when I was taking it off. I’m sorry Great Lash—you get points for nostalgia and iconic packaging, but that’s about it in 2021.

9. Pacifica Vegan Collagen Fluffy Lash Mascara

Score: 5/10
Best for: A natural look with a clean, vegan formula; sensitive eyes

I want to start by saying that although this one is ranking pretty low, I didn’t hate it. I definitely think there is a group of people out there that this mascara is great for, but it just wasn’t for me. It has an odd-shaped wand and a pretty wet formula that took a lot of coats to get results, so I had to do a fair amount of clean-up with a Q-tip. And then I felt that after all that work, it really didn’t do much for me. However, if you’re looking for a clean and 100-percent vegan formula or one that is ophthalmologist-approved for sensitive eyes, this would be perfect for you. I also feel the need to note that this tube is made of glass and is heavy—so just know that although that makes it feel luxurious and is more environmentally friendly, it’s probably not the one you want to throw in your purse for a day out.

8. e.l.f. Big Mood Mascara

Score: 5/10
Best for: Thickening and volumizing

I am a huge fan of e.l.f. but had never previously tried their mascaras, so I really wanted to like this one, but I found it kind of meh overall. It has a very thick wand that was a little difficult for me to maneuver, and I noticed that it provided thickness and volume but not much length, so I think someone with naturally long lashes could really like this one. I appreciated that the formula was not too wet or messy. However, it didn’t wear very well throughout the day, and I found myself with some flakiness and under-eye residue after only a few hours.

7. Essence Lash Princess Mascara

Score: 5.5/10
Best for: Subtle lengthening

There are lots of people in my life who are huge fans of Essence mascaras, so I had high hopes before trying this one out. Overall, I liked how it made my lashes look and was easy to apply, not having too wet of a formula. However, in contrast to e.l.f. Big Mood that only provided volume and no length, this one provided length but not a lot of volume, and I need a mascara that is going to do both. It also did not hold up very well, and I had quite a bit of residue under my eyes pretty quickly.

6. CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara

Score: 6.5/10
Best for: Non-irritating, all-day-every-day wear

I’ll always have a soft spot for this mascara because I’ve been using it on and off since I started wearing makeup. Unlike Great Lash, however, this one does stand the test of time. I think that it’s one of the most comfortable mascaras out there—my eyes never get irritated, and I love how lightweight it feels. I also really like the wand because it has lots of short bristles that help separate your lashes to achieve that perfect natural look. If I was going to swipe on some mascara for a Zoom meeting or to run some errands, this is the one I would choose. Also, the formula itself has a good consistency that isn’t messy. LashBlast only gets points deducted because I think it’s a little too subtle for a full glam look.

5. L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

Score: 7/10
Best for: Instant glam and volume that lasts all day

I’ve been a fan and user of this mascara for a while, and I really do like it. The major reason that it’s ranking this low is purely because it’s messy. It’s a pretty wet formula that requires a bit of clean-up, which is fine, but the tube also gets messy (which in turn gets mascara everywhere) and seems to dry out a little quicker than other options. And without careful application, it can also get slightly clumpy. However, it gets major points for how thick and voluminous it makes my lashes and for how long it lasts without flaking or leaving under-eye residue. I’m not gonna lie, I fell asleep on my couch watching Gilmore Girls while wearing this mascara, and when I woke up in a confused haze at 2 a.m., it was still perfectly intact.

4. Holika Holika Holi Pop Chubby Cara Mascara

Score: 8/10
Best for: A natural-yet-chic look and comfortable wear

I was really excited for this one because it is a tubing mascara, which means that it has polymers that wrap around your lashes rather than a wax-based formula that coats them. Tubing mascaras are also waterproof but less difficult to remove than traditional waterproof mascaras. This also means that it stays put without any flakiness or smudging throughout the day. After trying it out, I can say that all of this is true. I loved the natural yet lifted look that it provided, and it was so comfortable to wear. It stayed in place all day and was also easy to remove.

3. BLK/OPL Super Volumizing Mascara

Score: 8/10
Best for: Instant results and easy application

I hadn’t heard of this mascara before, so I was surprised and excited that I liked it so much. The first thing that stuck out to me was the wand—it’s curved in a shape similar to an eyelash curler and has a ton of small fiber bristles, so it provides that little extra oomph that my lashes need. It delivers both volume and length and the formula is not too wet, but the best part is that I saw immediate results. It only took a few quick coats to notice a significant difference in my lashes, which is perfect for when you want to quickly throw on some makeup before running out the door. This is definitely a new favorite of mine that I will continue to use.

2. UOMA by Sharon C. Badder BOOM! Mascara

Score: 9/10
Best for: Long-lasting, full and thick lashes

This was another new find for me, and I am so happy that I know about it now. The wand and formula make for a great application experience with no messiness. It instantly made my lashes dark, long, and voluminous, which are really all we can ask for in a mascara. The #1 reason this one got such a high score, however, is how long it lasted with no touch-ups. I wore this for an entire day of activities and a long car ride, and when I got home, it looked as perfect as when I had put it on that morning. It’s formulated with argan oil, castor seed oil, and Kalahari melon oil, which is not only the reason it’s so long-lasting, but it also nourishes and moisturizes your lashes over time.

1. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara

Score: 10/10
Best for: Day-to-night length and volume

Like most things in my life, I first tried Sky High because I saw a TikTok about it. This girl was literally swimming in a pool and had the most perfect lashes I had ever seen, so of course, I ran to the comments and found out that she was wearing Sky High Waterproof Mascara. However, now that I’ve tried both, I will be the first to admit that the non-waterproof formula is far superior to the waterproof—and that’s the one that earned the #1 spot on this list. This mascara has the perfect balance of length and volume, and it makes your lashes look amazing without being too over-the-top or getting clumpy or flaky at all. The brush is long and skinny with a lot of bristles, so it is easy to maneuver and really get in there to coat all of your lashes (it also works wonders on bottom lashes). I love this mascara because it is subtle enough to wear in the daytime but also glam enough to wear with a more intense makeup look at night.

The post I Tried 10 Popular Drugstore Mascaras—Here’s How They Ranked appeared first on The Everygirl.

You’re in the salon chair getting your hair done, and your stylist asks the dreaded question: “What products have you been using on your lately?” You begin to sweat as you weigh the options of lying versus having to actually admit to this trained professional that you’ve been using a $6 shampoo and conditioner and sitting there in shame for the rest of the appointment. This conundrum, my friends, is what led us to question: is there really a difference between salon and drugstore hair products?

Although your stylist has your best interest at heart, splurging on your entire haircare routine might not be necfessary. After doing some major research, we’re laying it all out for you so you can decide for yourself: do I really have to buy that salon shampoo?

High-End vs. High-Quality

First of all, it’s important to note that high-end does not always equal high-quality and that high-quality is subjective. Just because your BFF’s favorite salon haircare gave her a head full of dreamy locks doesn’t mean it will do that for you. In this same vein, just because something is from the drugstore doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve a little merit. Affordable brands like Kristin Ess’s beloved line and the products from The Inkey List are examples of how drugstore haircare can mimic brands double the price—it’s all just subjective. If you try one drugstore hair product and it doesn’t work for you, that doesn’t mean you’re sworn to a $30 shampoo the rest of your life.

Shampoo and Conditioner

The shampoos and conditioners we find at the drugstore are appealing for obvious reasons. They’re affordable, convenient, and we love all of their different scents (I mean, who can resist vanilla & shea butter?). But what makes them so affordable may be cause for concern. Although drugstore shampoos do contain high-grade ingredients found in salon products, they only contain small amounts of them. They typically contain chemicals, which can strip your hair of its natural oils, essentially drying it out. They’re also known for diluting their products with fillers. These tend to make your hair feel super soft, but can also leave behind a waxy build-up. Basically, your hair feels soft but isn’t actually hydrated from within.

Luckily, more and more drugstore brands are working to solve these issues. Many are going sulfate-free or swapping out harsher ingredients for organic alternatives. In the end, there’s nothing wrong with choosing drugstore shampoos & conditioners—shampoo is shampoo and conditioner is conditioner. The key is to choose those with more high-grade ingredients and fewer fillers and chemicals.

Mixed Chicks

Shampoo

Mixed Chicks

Deep Conditioner

The reason salon shampoos tend to be on the pricier side is because they are highly concentrated with high-grade ingredients. They often consist of vitamins, oils, and minerals that are truly nourishing yet too pricey to exist in most drugstore options. These shampoos also include fewer fillers than their drugstore counterparts, preventing that waxy build-up, and instead, hydrating from within. Because these premium shampoos are more concentrated, you don’t need to use as much to see results.

In the long run, most would agree that you end up spending about the same, no matter which side of the coin you choose. The major difference is that salon products last longer and contain higher amounts of quality ingredients that truly are better for your hair.

Treatments

Treatments, on the other hand, are usually a little more costly for a reason. You won’t find a drugstore dupe for Olaplex because it’s a proprietary patented formula. The testing and chemistry behind high-end brands are often one of the reasons for the price mark-up, but in turn, you know you’re getting a product that is recommended by professionals. This is an area of your hair care routine that splurging (whatever that means for you) is probably worth it.

Styling Products

Styling products and leave-ins are pretty much the same as shampoos and conditioners. You’ll likely find what you’re looking for in a drugstore product, such as bouncier curls and voluminous roots, but a high-end formula might be fortified with ingredients that actually help your hair in the process.

You can save on products like dry shampoos that aren’t meant to nourish your hair, while a leave-in conditioner that you use every time you wash your hair should offer up a little more than detangling and shine.

The post Are Expensive Hair Products Worth It? Here’s the Lowdown on Drugstore vs. Salon appeared first on The Everygirl.

When a celebrity raves about a beauty product, I’m first in line to try. I’m typically a skeptic, refusing to believe something could be that much better than the items I’ve tried previously. But when recommendations stack up, I can’t help but need to get my hands on it. Celebrities have a unique take on beauty products: they’re often working with the best and brightest on their skin, hair, and makeup; they need products that work on camera and off, and they’re also mostly amateurs too—if a product is fussy, they’re not likely dealing with it. Basically, celebs are just like us, just with access to experts and thousands of dollars to spend on their beauty rituals.

I’m constantly researching celebrity favorite beauty products (both for my day job and as an expensive hobby), so it was only in due time that I’d start incorporating some of them into my routine to see if they’re actually worth the hype (and the high price tag).

Tatcha

The Camellia Cleansing Oil

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Halima Aden, Doja Cat

Celebrities need a luxurious, deep cleansing oil maybe more than the rest of us. All that makeup has to come off somehow. I finished off one of these cleansing oils and have been sitting on repurchasing for a while because it's a bit of a splurge, but it's so lovely to use and made me actually excited to take my makeup off at the end of the day. It made my skin feel soft and supple and removed every stitch of makeup—without giving me cloudy eyes.

iS Clinical

Cleansing Complex

Celebs who love it: Debra Messing, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tamera Mowry

My dermatologist recommended this to me endlessly, but it was seeing Rosie Huntington-Whitely use it that finally broke me down to buy it. Until this, I had never saw the importance of splurging on a cleanser. I used the CeraVe cleanser every beauty blogger told me to buy and went on my merry way. This is ideal for someone with acne-prone or oily skin who's been burned by other acne cleansers that dried out their skin, because this somehow is deeply cleansing without stripping. It keeps acne at bay with a little bit of salicylic acid. I think this cleanser is fantastic, but I prefer Avene’s gel cleanser for half the price.

Biologique Recherche

Lotion P50 Exfoliating Toner

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Chriselle Lim, Tayshia Adams

With this toner, I see why celebrities have good skin. P50 is an exfoliating liquid that really follows the age-old adage "it gets worse before it gets better." My skin looked atrocious the first few nights I used P50 (red, splotchy, broken out), but once that went away, it revealed brighter, smoother, softer skin I never knew I could see. It smells like feet, but I'll take it.

Caudalie

Instant Detox Mask

Celebs who love it: Kourtney Kardashian, Danielle Brooks, Precious Lee

After seeing this mask blow up on TikTok, I picked it up at a rare time it was in stock, and now I can't live without it. Unlike other clay masks, this doesn't leave my skin feeling tight and waxy; it removes all the gunk from my pores without sacrificing my glow. I use it about a once a week in the evenings, and it's made such a difference in the clogged pores and blackheads on my nose. They're fewer and farther between since I started using this, and it helps clear and heal when I do have some.

La Mer

Moisturizing Soft Cream

Celebs who love it: Megan thee Stallion, Nina Dobrev, Kelsey Merritt

I indulged in the ultimate splurge last spring when I picked up a mini of this on a whim during my first in-store shopping excursion post-vaccine (oh, the days!). If the beauty industry can wear you down on one thing, it’s convincing you that La Mer’s moisturizing products are a 10/10. I used it a few times and quickly walked myself back to the store to return it. This is lovely and luxurious, for sure, but is it worth the high price? Not for me. I wanted something viscous and thick that would seal in everything at the end of my skincare routine and make my skin look plump and moisturized, and this just isn't that. It's lightweight and thinner than I wanted, so it doesn't provide that deep moisture I was looking for. Ultimately, I ended up with Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore, which solved every problem for about half the price.

Armani Beauty

Luminous Silk Foundation

Celebs who love it: Lori Harvey, Barbara Palvin, Palmona Elsesser

We all have that product… you know, the one you try once and immediately know you’ll be indebted to paying that price tag until you die. For me, it’s Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk. I’ll eat the cost of this magic foundation as long as I’m around, and I won’t complain even a bit. Luminous Silk is unlike any other foundation I’ve ever tried. While “luminous” is in the name, it has a natural, skinlike finish that tows the perfectly-balanced line of being dewy without looking oily or unnatural. It has a buildable medium coverage that looks flawless when my skin is in good shape or when I’m suffering with a bad hormonal breakout. It never clings to dry patches, stays all day, and always has a shade that matches my olive undertones. The celebs got it right with this one.

Fenty Beauty

Instant Warmth Bronzer

Celebs who love it: Madison Beer, Cynthia Erivo, Doja Cat

Everyone needs a blendable, smooth bronzer in their collection that they can always count on, and Fenty Beauty's is mine (and apparently a few others' too). I know if I pack this for a trip, I can count on it to make me look sunkissed in a very natural way. I use a big, fluffy brush to apply it to the perimeter of my face, and it really just makes me look like I have a slight tan. The undertones and shades in this bronzer cover just about every skin tone, but it's Fenty, so who's surprised? I've hit pan on this and will have this in my collection for a long time.

Laura Mercier

Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Celebs who love it: Saweetie, Jhené Aiko, Doja Cat

Laura Mercier's classic setting powder will forever reign supreme, and the celebs agree. It's a lightweight, natural-looking powder that's blurring and smoothing on the skin. It makes your makeup last double the length it would without it and looks good when my skin is dry or oily. I especially love that this comes in a few different shades, because we all know “translucent” isn’t translucent on everyone. On my medium skin tone, the “honey” shade blends away naturally without making me look grey and washed out.

Olaplex

No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme

Celebs who love it: Leslie Grace, Addison Rae, Camila Mendes

It wasn’t this product alone that nursed my damaged, broken, straggly hair back to life, but I’d give this about 75 percent of the credit. Olaplex contains a proprietary formula that strengthens, repairs, and smooths the bonds in your hair from the inside out, so your doesn't just look healthier, it is. If you're dying your hair often, using lots of heat, or spending a long time in the sun (celebrities are guilty of all three), this repairing leave-in conditioner will cure all that damage and prevent it from getting worse. It's lightweight on your hair, and you only need the tiniest amount, so this container lasts truly forever.
