February 2021

Celebrity fragrance is often associated with the 2000s, a decade of obsession and craze over celebrity culture. Over the last several years, celebrity fragrance sales have declined as consumers showed more loyalty to higher-end prestige fragrances than they did for their once favorite celeb. However, this trend did not stop Kim Kardashian-West from reinventing the industry by launching her namesake brand KKW Fragrance in 2017.

The primary difference between KKW Fragrance and the celebrity perfume lines of the past is that KKW is the owner, concepter, and distributor of her scents. This means there are no licensing deals, magazine ads, commercials, or cross-country department store signing tours. Instead, she’s leveraged social media and cutting-edge press kits to communicate her scents, which are still sold primarily direct-to-consumer with select lines carried at Ulta.

I love fragrance, and throughout the years, my KKW Fragrance collection has grown to 10 products—not a single one I had tried before purchasing. That means, naturally, there are some that I absolutely love and some that I really missed the mark on. While the idea of buying perfume having no idea what it will smell like is terrifying, it is also exhilarating opening the package and being surprised. Fragrance is a very subjective category, and thanks to KKW, I’ve learned a lot on how to read fragrance notes and determine if one is for me. I have a preference for oriental gourmand scents that are warm-handed with base notes of vanilla and sandalwood. These are often evened out by floral middle notes and fruity top notes. Therefore, you’ll see I had a strong preference for the sweeter scents, I felt OK about the floral family, and aromas that I would describe as fresh or clean fell to the bottom. Here are my thoughts on the 10 fragrances that I own.

Because the KKW Fragrance line often includes limited edition scents, we’ve included some similar options if those notes appeal to you.

The ones I would buy again:

1. Ride or Die (Limited Edition)

if you like fruity & juicy

With notes of luscious blackberry, juicy plum, night-blooming jasmine, vanilla, caramel, and tonka bean, Ride or Die truly is just that—a ride or die. Whether day or night, work or a weekend getaway, Ride or Die is a fragrance that you can always count on. The good news is this juicy aroma was a universal love from everyone that I’ve had smell it. The bad news is it was released as part of the limited edition KKW Hearts launches in 2018 and 2019 (there was no launch in 2020) but has not been brought back since. Which means I’m left with an empty bottle and good memories from the days when I had my Ride or Die in my life.

Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum

While the nostalgia of this one might get to you a bit, there's a reason it's still a major fragrance favorite!

notes:
Top - wild berries, mandarin
Middle - honeysuckle, gardenia, jasmine
Base - amber, vanilla, sandalwood, praline

2. Bae

if you like powdery & creamy

I held out on Bae until the most recent KKW Hearts drop in 2021, and I have no idea why! This is a luscious powdery scent with notes of whipped vanilla, white sandalwood, gardenia blossom, coconut water, and juicy mandarin. It is a creamy and comforting aroma that I find myself lifting my wrist to catch a whiff of all day. This scent leans itself more to casual settings and is my favorite to spritz on before I go to bed. Like all of the KKW Hearts, it isn’t the longest-lasting, but you will get a few good hours of wear time, which for $30 is totally worth it.

3. BFF

if you like sweet & soft

BFF encapsulates all the loving feelings of Valentine’s Day with notes of marshmallow, pink rose petals, wild berries, crisp apple, and yes… vanilla. Compared to the others, it definitely most closely resembles the concept of a mouthwatering candy heart without being overpowering. All of the KKW Heart boxes come with a spot for “To:” and “From:” so this one especially makes an adorable gift to show your BFF how much you love them.

4. Baddie (Limited Edition)

if you like feminine & floral

When I initially smelled Baddie, I was really disappointed that I misjudged the description so poorly. But after it had settled in for a few hours… WOW. The first KKW Hearts drop (Ride or Die, Bae, BFF) is sweeter. The second drop (Baddie, Wifey, Baby Girl) is more modern and feminine. Baddie, therefore, is not sweet at all with notes of amber, musk, wild rose, and geranium. It is a floral scent with a bit of a musky kick. I would wear this one for work or evening activities like happy hour. The fragrance has not returned since its launch in 2019.

Top - glistening lemon pear water, shimmering bergamot, pink peppercorn
Middle - silk peony buds, rose concentrate, pink tagete
Base - pure white moss, warm benzoin, modern glossy musks

The ones I’ll eventually use up:

5. Wifey

if you like sensual & sophisticated

Wifey, I have mixed feelings about. I find the intent to be good, but the execution is not very seamless. Wifey initially smells very heavy on the top and middle notes which include crisp yuzu, creamy magnolia, and mimosa. Patchouli, soft musks, and whipped caramel are included on the dry down but hardly come through. Do not get me wrong, this is still a very nice sophisticated scent that is more sensual and refined; it is just not my favorite.

6. Body I (Limited Edition)

if you like woody & fierce

At $60, the KKW Body line is a family of more intense fragrances that are rich and longer-lasting than the $30 options in the line. The original Body is a woody scent made with Australian sandalwood, musk, amber, jasmine sambac, Turkish rose, and bergamot. Because of the sensual nature of Body, I think it lends itself more to nighttime. The best part is, the bottle is incredibly stunning and will look beautiful on any nightstand.

Middle - solar orange blossom, jasmine abs, ylang ylang, monoi

7. Diamond Kourtney (Limited Edition)

if you like oriental & refined

KKW Diamonds is a sister trio line with the yellow diamond belonging to Kourtney. It is a floriental scent with patchouli, tonka bean, white currant, jasmine, and magnolia. It is a more floral, fresh, and mature fragrance. Of the three original Diamonds (Yellow, Pink, and White), I definitely think this one is the best executed, but Diamonds as a whole is my least favorite collection to date.

KKW Hearts Gold Eau de Toilette

notes:
Top - juicy golden currant, bright lemon, coconut mineral water
Middle - luminous honeysuckle, yellow tiare flower, gleaming orange blossom
Base - golden amber woods, precious vanilla bean, glowing skin musks

The ones that have remained relatively untouched:

8. KKW Crystal Gardenia

if you like fresh & clean

KKW Crystals was the first collection for the brand and the first fragrance I purchased when it launched back in 2017. It is a very straightforward white floral fragrance with notes of gardenia petals, velvet tuberose, and watery lily. If you like scents that are fresh, floral, and clean, then you will enjoy this, but it was not for me. It did, however, come with three mini crystals which I thought was a beautiful personal touch!

9. Diamond Khloé

if you like floral & clean

With notes of sensual cloud musk, pink sapphire tuberose, blushing jasmine, and Italian bergamot, the Pink Diamond by Khloe is the most floral of the Diamond trio. It is a fragrance that I really wanted to get behind, but as much as I tried, I could not get over the smell of alcohol and cheap roses.

10. Diamond Kim

if you like sharp & clean

Finally, of all my KKW Fragrances, we have arrived at my last and least favorite, the White Diamond by Kim. With solar white floral, white musk, and tropical floral leaves, this aroma is very harsh and very mature (think: grandma). I personally find the scent to be overwhelming and uninviting. There are no frills with this one, so go for it if you like sharp, crisp, and to the point.

The post I Bought 10 KKW Fragrances Without Smelling Them—Here’s the Verdict appeared first on The Everygirl.

In my last fews years of adulthood, I’ve begun to start questioning a lot of the beauty myths I’ve been told my whole life. “You don’t need sunscreen inside!” Debunked. “You need to wash your hair every day!” Debunked. “The only way to get rid of a zit is to pop it!” Debunked times one million. “You don’t have to shave past your knees!” Actually, still in-tact.

So now that we’re spending so much time at home, I started to question a very common beauty myth: do we actually have to shower every day? I’m sure you’ve wondered too. I mean, I’ve done it before, and my body didn’t implode. But is it actually as important as our moms have told us since we were kids? Let’s explore.

So, do you have to shower every day?

According to Dr. Charlotte Birnbaum, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, nope! Taking a shower removes dirt, pollution, oil, and sweat from our skin, so how often you shower depends on your activity level and your skin type. “If you have dry or sensitive skin, I recommend showering every 2-3 days,” Dr. Birnbaum said. “On the other hand, if you have a more oily skin type and are acne-prone, it is important to rinse off to avoid breakouts.” She explained that typically, showering every other day should be enough to keep your skin clean and irritation-free.

What about when I work out?

Dr. Birnbaum recommended showering any time after excessive sweating to avoid breakouts or skin irritation. However, try to avoid using too much soap. If you know you’re going to work out at 6pm tonight, try not to shower that morning before work. Showering too much can dry out your skin, especially if you’re not using the right products, showering for too long, or the water is too hot (more on all of this in a moment!).

And of course, if you’re visibly dirty, please shower. It’s better to have a little dryness than to smell, of course.

How can I limit skin irritation if I have to shower more often?

Dr. Birnbaum provided a few tips to keep your skin in-check while showering.

  1. Avoid really hot water. Instead, shower in warm or cool water (which is nice when it’s hot in the summertime!).
  2. Limit the length of your shower to 5-10 minutes so you’re not standing in the water for too long.
  3. Use your fingertips to lather and spread soap on the body instead of a washcloth or a loofah. (If not a new or clean one every time, these can harbor lots of bacteria and basically just spread around all the dirt and gunk you removed from your last shower.)
  4. Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free (or naturally fragranced) soap.
  5. After showering, blot your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing. This can lead to extra exfoliation that you don’t want when your skin is wet and vulnerable. If you have a microfiber towel, even better.
  6. While your skin is still slightly damp, apply any moisturizing lotions or creams.

Fun fact: according to Dr. Birnbaum, you don’t actually have to use soap all over the whole body. Again, if you just went on a week-long camping trip and are visibly dirty, you’ll want to lather up all over. But otherwise, Dr. Birnbaum said you only need soap on the underarms and groin. If your skin gets dry and irritated easily, try this technique during your regular, not-after-workouts-or-camping showers.

Want to take a better shower? Here’s what we recommend:

Bioderma

Atoderm Cleansing Oil

Yep, it's a cleansing oil for the body! Perfect for removing dirt, oil, and grime, but can also be used as a shaving oil.

Elysium Naturals Co.

Whipper Body Butter

If you want a thick, intense body butter to keep your skin soft and supple all year long, look no further. Its whipped texture makes it feel lightweight even though its thick and hydrating. You can even use it as a foot cream!

The post You’re Thinking It, We Said It: Do We Actually Have to Shower Every Day? appeared first on The Everygirl.

I’ve discussed at length the amount I watched our Social Media Editor’s Bag Spill YouTube video before I started working here. I was desperate to make a good impression and know the company inside and out, and to me, that meant having every single part of Abigail’s popular video ingrained into my memory, ready to shout at a moment’s notice. Then, once I started working here, I thought endlessly about what my own bag spill might contain. Would I talk about my makeup bag, like Josie? Would I prep my ideal workout bag (filled with my favorite protein bar, the best shower wipes, and resistance bands galore)? Maybe I’d go really wild and share my weekender for a trip? But if push came to shove, I knew exactly what I’d share in my purse: keys, phone, and wallet. That’s literally it.

I’ve never been one to carry a giant purse unless I was toting wine to a friend’s place or bringing around a book to share. I keep my bag pretty bare when it comes to running errands and going out and about. Well, we’ve found ourselves in a very different situation, and my bare-bones bag had to get a little bit heftier to accommodate. And now that my time has finally come, I’m taking it upon myself to give you it all. So, here it is: what’s in my bag.

1. Face masks

This is the most obvious addition to my bag as of late. I prefer to have two masks with me at all times: one in my bag, and of course, one on my face (have you ever been out and your mask breaks? Holding your mask to your face is the 2021 walk of shame). After trying dozens of masks over the year, I’ve discovered all the qualities I want in a good mask: it’s breathable, soft on my face, doesn’t stain with makeup (because we know I wear quite a bit), and isn’t super expensive. And I’ve found all of that (and more) with my new favorite mask from Soul Mask

These masks are made sustainably in Los Angeles by a small business, which I absolutely love supporting right now. It feels good to know I’m swapping this everyday item I use for something from a small business that’s doing things ethically and sustainably. But from an aesthetics standpoint, these truly come in the cutest colors. I always like to have a classic black and neutral mask, but I also loved the colorful options—especially with spring and summer coming up. I have to wear a mask to protect myself and everyone around me when I need to go anywhere, so why not find something that I truly love to put on every time I leave the house? These will now be on heavy rotation!

2. Lip balm or gloss

Especially when wearing a mask, I almost never put on a lip color if I’m leaving my house. Instead, I’ve curated quite the collection of balms and clear glosses to keep my lips moisturized.

3. Facial spray

For a good chunk of the last year, I carried around a small tub of moisturizer basically everywhere I went. My skin gets really dry with a mask on, and I’m also using way more drying products to help combat all the mask-ne I was getting. Since Soul Mask is really soft and doesn’t tug at my skin, I don’t notice this as much, and instead, I just keep a mini facial spray with me to spritz myself when I feel a little dry.

4. At least 5 receipts

My mom is a receipt hoarder, and it has made me also a receipt hoarder. She taught me that keeping your receipts in a stash is important because you never know when you’ll need to return something or need to look back on how much you paid. Eventually, I take all of these and decide if I will actually need them or if I can recycle them.

5. Keys and wallet

Obviously, I need to have these to literally survive. I use a cardholder wallet for my everyday cards, and then I keep a bigger wallet at home with checks, gift cards, and anything else that I wouldn’t necessarily need just to run to Target.

Madewell

The Leather Card Case

6. Cotton round and mascara

If I’m wearing mascara, it’s a guarantee that it’s going to be everywhere but my lashes by the time I reach my destination. I don’t know if it’s the steam from me breathing into my mask or what, but my mascara travels all across my face and looks heinous in a mere 10 to 15 minutes after I leave my house. So, I’ve been traveling with a cotton round (reusable ones are great for this) to wipe away anything that’s on my face. Then, I keep a small tube of mascara with me for touch-ups. If I’m just running a casual errand, this obviously isn’t an issue, but if I’m meeting up with my quarantine crew or just looking to keep my makeup intact for a little while, this has been my saving grace.

7. Whatever earrings I’m wearing

I notoriously take off my earrings about halfway into an evening without fail. I have sensitive ears, and even my nicest of jewelry bothers me after enough time. Once everyone has seen my outfit, the earrings go straight into my bag (usually to stay until I wear them again).

The Andre Walker Hair Typing System was developed in the 1990s to help classify different types of curls. The method gained a cult following in the late 2010s as afro-textured people ditched their relaxers in favor of growing out their natural curls. By classifying hair into four types, it allowed natural-hair wearers to make more sense of something that wasn’t well understood. It provided a sense of direction, a close-knit community, and a feeling of hope that maybe this was the missing piece to all of our never-ending frustrations. While knowing your curl pattern is incredibly useful in terms of styling, it falls short of providing information on the characteristics that are essential for hair growth and retention. Unfortunately, curl patterns have been heavily relied on and given far too much credit. While the system can be used as a guide, it should not be viewed as the be-all and end-all of curly-hair care. Here is what to prioritize instead:

Scalp Health

A clean scalp is the first step to maintaining healthy hair. Oil, product build-up, and dead skin cells clog pores and stagger hair growth. To cleanse and balance your scalp, try a scalp rinse like this one that has a targeted applicator, making it perfect for braids and protective styles. You can also try giving yourself regular scalp massages, which generate blood circulation to the hair follicles. This brings nutrients to the scalp, aiding in hair growth. Studies have also shown that scalp massages increase hair thickness. Ultimately, no matter how your hair curls, it will need to grow out of a scalp that is clean and moisturized.

Porosity

Two people can have a 4B hair type, but if one has low porosity hair and the other is characterized as high porosity, their approach to haircare will be totally different. The curl pattern system fails to account for this. Porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. This is determined by the formation of your hair cuticles. Low porosity hair is characterized by cuticles that tightly overlap, making it difficult for water and hair products to penetrate the hair shaft. While low porosity hair has trouble absorbing moisture, it is actually able to retain it very well due to the tight cuticle formation making it tough for water to escape.

In contrast, high porosity hair is characterized by cuticles that are widely spaced. This makes it easier for water to penetrate the hair shaft but just as easy for water to escape. A low porosity hair type wants to limit protein and go for products that are lightweight, while a high porosity hair type needs more proteins, rich creams, and oils to maintain moisture. For all curl patterns, this understanding will be crucial to your wash days and daily maintenance routines.

Protein/Moisture Balance

Hair needs a proper balance of both protein and moisture in order to grow and retain healthy length. Too much of one will lead to breakage. Hair that feels dry, brittle, and barely stretches before breaking is a sign of too much protein and needs moisture to counteract. Hair that stretches on and on but feels weak or limp could be suffering from too much moisture and needs protein to counteract. We have been led to believe that our hair needs more protein than it actually does and that it should be incorporated at every chance. This is not sound advice. Even if your hair does need protein, it likely doesn’t need a lot of it. Low and high hair porosities tend to have very specific behaviors in terms of protein and moisture. Once you understand your porosity type, the protein/moisture balance becomes a bit easier to find and maintain.

Every time my friends come to my apartment, they leave with something. A sheet mask I’d like to share, a mascara I’ll never get to opening, a moisturizer made for their skin type—my personal closet has become a full-blown beauty closet that is filled to the brim with beauty products for testing and admiring. But since I don’t get to see my friends as often, they’re missing my weekly giveaways; and do you know what’s like a personal beauty closet at your door every season? My favorite beauty subscription box: FabFitFun

FabFitFun is essentially a curated selection of beauty, fitness, lifestyle, decor, and more at your door four times a year, so you can test, rate, and rave about new products in the same manner as your favorite influencers and beauty editors. #2. FabFitFun loves supporting women-owned brands and businesses, so every box is typically filled with products that support female entrepreneurs.
