New York Fashion Week has wrapped for 2019 and there’s a lot of takeaway for what to expect in beauty trends for the upcoming year. The ’90s renaissance maintains its stronghold, glass skin is very in, art-deco-inspired graphic liner is the new statement look, and now is the perfect time to invest in some grown-up glitter.
As we move away from the ultra-glam, heavily contoured, muted tones; and skin as matte as interior wall paint trends of the past, we’re seeing makeup that’s way less fussy, more fun, and definitely more youthful going forward into this year. Here’s a full rundown of the newly launched makeup products you’ll need to nail all of 2019’s biggest trends.
Camelina + Strobe Luminizing Primer
The Korean beauty trend of glass skin is taking hold here in the U.S., forcing us to FINALLY veer away from the impossibly matte and lifeless makeup of the past. This primer doses the skin in a universally-flattering iridescent sheen without being too obvious or greasy, setting you up for flawless foundation application.
Flawless Lumière Radiance-Perfecting Foundation
Continuing on with glass skin, Laura Mercier’s brand new medium-coverage foundation drenches skin with light-reflecting and skin-perfecting coverage as well as mushroom extract and vitamin C — making it less of a foundation and more of a blurring and tinted skincare product. Skin-forward makeup is here to stay, we officially left wearing a mask of heavy foundation in 2018.
Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder
It’s no surprise by now that everything Fenty Beauty releases instantly becomes must-have makeup, and their new setting powder is absolutely no exception. The finely-milled setting powder melts into your foundation, locking it into place all day without being overly matte or chalky — perfect for maintaining that fine line between dewey skin and oily skin.
In Monochrome Sheer Collection
Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2019 is Living Coral, an absolute dream come true for beauty and makeup enthusiasts. We’re guaranteed to see this shade everywhere in 2019 and we’re stoked. This is a universally-flattering color on all skin tones, and M.A.C offers up a complete line of products for a full face of lush skin-tone enhancing corals — from blush to high-shine lip gloss to glittery eye pigment. We are truly living for Living Coral.
All Fired Up Limited Edition Glitter & Glow Mini Eye Shadow Set
Stila’s liquid glitter eyeshadows are not new — we’ve been obsessed with them for a solid minute now — but their decision to offer up a bundle of travel-sized options for the product is exactly what we all need to get back into glitter. If you’re worried about glitter eyeshadow triggering some middle school dance flashbacks, fear not; these babies are loaded with super-fine glitter that enhances rather than overpowers.
BFF Liquid Liner PR Collection
The entire time I was watching Russian Doll (Netflix’s badass new series written and directed by an all-female ensemble, go watch ASAP!) I could NOT get over Greta Lee’s amazing electric blue, floating cat eyeliner. Turns out we can all expect to see a lot more of the bold art-deco-inspired eye makeup as more companies are churning out bright, matte liquid liners in primary colors to keep up with this growing trend.
Brow Endowed Volumizer
Despite the '90s making their way back into beauty and fashion in recent seasons, we thankfully learned our lesson about overplucking and decided to keep big, bold brows in style. Brows are remaining large and in charge, but toned way down from the heavily sculpted and manipulated styles of the recent past. This brow volumizer from Urban Decay features a double-ended primer and a brow mascara, both with razor-thin applicator wands that allow you to define your natural shape in two simple swipes.
Off Tropic Shadow Palette
Neon has been surprisingly prevalent in runway looks this season, and if you’re not quite sure that Day-Glo orange lids are going to be the trend you call your own this year, NYX has you covered with a super affordable palette which will allow you to test out the exact statement look you’re going for. You can start slow by dotting your inner corners with the electric blue shade or by lining your lower water line with the muted, emerald green — see where your imagination takes you.
Gloss Angeles Lipglosses
In 2018, lipgloss finally made its way back onto the scene by way of flashy metallics and glittery topcoats — a long way from the over-lined, matte lips we wore in previous years. The trend for 2019 is leaning toward super-shiny glosses in more natural and flattering shades without any heavy-handed glitter. Smashbox delivers 14 high-shine glosses whose shades are all inspired by the city of angels in a formula that is sleek and comfortable on the lips — never tacky or sticky.
Super Nineties Lip Slick Lip Kit
For those of us who aren’t quite ready to part ways with our matte liners and lips, Charlotte Tilbury brings us a duo of products that keep us right on trend with a '90s-inspired brown shade of lipstick and matching liner. With subtle, terracotta undertones, it pairs perfectly with smudged eyeliner and Dr. Martens.
