My favorite thing about the start of spring is the optimism. Although we’ll be experiencing winter weather through mid-April, there’s an excitement for warmth and sunshine in the air. On the first sunny days, no matter the temperature (usually high 30s in the Midwest), the streets are bustling with people. People are excited to take long walks and bask in the sunshine, even if it means grabbing your warmest puffer and a hot coffee. We drop all the deep, warm tones for pastels and brights, likely in the form of sweaters, jackets, long pants, and of course, the coolest spring nail colors. And we can’t forget the historic swap from hot to iced beverages—even if touching an iced coffee practically freezes your fingers. 💞 🧚‍♀️ 💐

Spring is in the air, and what better way to celebrate it than a fresh coat of polish? You can kiss all those dreary winter tones goodbye, and say hello to spring 2022’s full lineup of bright, pastel, and breezy tones.

1. Green Apple

No matter how you slice it, green is *the* color of spring 2022, and this bright shade screams warm weather. When you roll up with this bright, fun color on your nails, you’re bound to get a few stares—the good kind.

2. Murky Neutrals

Gone are the days that nail colors have to look “pretty.” Nail shades aren’t limited to beige neutrals and cherry reds anymore. Expect to see lots of murky, “dirty” neutrals in place of the standard beiges and browns.

3. Bubblegum Pink

Pink will never go out of style, especially on the nails, but this bubblegum version is the cool-girl way to wear it this spring. It’s a fun take on a classic red nail: timeless, bold, and goes with everything.

4. Periwinkle

Pastels are a sign that spring is here, so start off the season with a nod to it on your nails with this periwinkle shade. How “Very Peri” of you!

5. Pearl

For a unique take on classic white nails, this pearl shade is head-turning without being bright and bold. If you’re into a more understated nail, this one is bound to have people asking you what’s on your nails.

6. Bright Cerulean

All I needed was to see Rihanna decked out in this shade to know it was about to be the biggest color of spring/summer 2022. Not ready to go that bold with your outfit? Try it on your nails first. Guaranteed you won’t stop staring at your hands.

7. Jade Jelly

Remember when we said shades of green are big? We weren’t kidding. TikTok has blown up the jelly nail trend, and now you can get it at home. We’re loving this jade shade in this ultra-shiny, sheer jelly formula.

8. Multichrome

Seen on Dua Lipa with an ultra-reflective purple mani, this nail color (or variation of colors) is about to blow up. In different lights, it’ll pick up on various hues. It looks impossibly cool and space-age-y, just what trend reporters are predicting for 2022’s big fashion moments.

9. Neon Yellow

When you’re willing sunny days to fruition, you can’t go wrong with it on your nails. Whether you go for a more pastel version or for major neon action (I’ll be going with the latter, of course), you’ll feel bright and cheery every time you look down at your hands.

10. Tangerine

This vibrant mani is the equivalent of a spring break on your nails. Shades of orange are making waves this year in fashion and beauty, and your nails are no exception. If you want something bright but don’t want to go neon just yet, this shade is the perfect medium.

TL;DR: Yes, you need a vitamin C serum in your skincare routine. You’ve likely heard of the magical ingredient or maybe even toyed around with testing one, but did you know it’s one of dermatologists’ most-recommended ingredients to add to your skincare routine?

Vitamin C is one of the most universally effective and well-rounded active ingredients in skincare. No matter what type of issues you have with your skin—dullness, hyperpigmentation, redness, fine lines, lack of firmness—vitamin C will yield some impressive improvements to the appearance of your complexion once you commit to daily application of it.

What is Vitamin C?

Just like the vitamin C you take to stave off sickness during cold and flu season, vitamin C in skincare acts as a powerful antioxidant against environmental free radicals that aim to wreak havoc on your face. Vitamin C is used for brightening skin, fading dark spots left behind after breakouts, and establishing a more even skin tone.

How exactly does it do this? The visible effects of oxidative stress, a state that our skin goes into when there are not enough antioxidants to combat the damage caused by free radicals, can present itself as sallow skin tone, redness, and generally unwell-looking skin. Free radicals are created when our cells encounter damaging agents in our environment such as air pollution, vehicle emissions, cigarette smoke, dirt, and UVA/UVB rays.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Extensive oxidative stress can weaken your skin; therefore, it can accelerate aging as well as hyperpigmentation caused by post-acne scarring or sun damage. Vitamin C is not just a potent topical antioxidant; it is one of the more versatile active ingredients, as it also stimulates the skin’s production of collagen and is naturally anti-inflammatory—good news for people who also suffer from acne, oiliness, or blackheads or those who want some anti-aging properties.

Basically, everyone benefits from vitamin C. There is definitely a lot of “fluff” in skincare that you could do without, but if you’re focusing on youth preservation, calming redness and inflammation, fading dark spots, or just wanting that elusive “glow” that only Glossier models seem to naturally possess, you really shouldn’t skip vitamin C.

How to Choose a Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is surprisingly complicated to formulate in a way that guarantees its effectiveness. The active ingredients needed to make a potent serum are extremely sensitive to oxidation and light exposure, so the packaging of these products is just as important as the formula itself.

A few of the most popular forms of vitamin C in skincare are ascorbic ccid (also L-ascorbic acid), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate. If you are looking at the ingredients list of a supposed vitamin C product and none of the aforementioned are listed in the first couple ingredients, the product is not potent enough to show results.

L-ascorbic acid is the most commonly used vitamin C derivative used in skincare, but with a pH of 3.5, it is also the most acidic varietal. Most skin types can tolerate L-ascorbic acid, but if you are particularly sensitive, then consider formulas with any of the other commonly used derivatives—just know it will take longer to see the desired results.

Ideally, your vitamin C serum will be packaged in an air-tight container with a pump that is either an opaque or amber-hued bottle to avoid oxidation and light exposure. A lot of vitamin C serums come with pipet applicators, which unfortunately allow for daily air exposure. While this is not ideal, it does not necessarily mean that it will be a bad product.

With every vitamin C serum, it is important to understand that there is an expiration date on the product. Take note of the characteristics of your serum when you first begin using it. Once your product changes color, texture, smell, or becomes cloudy, you need to discontinue use immediately, as it has oxidized and therefore expired. Vitamin C serums typically have a shelf life of around six months to a year after opened.

How to Use Vitamin C Serum

Because the environmental aggressors that create free radicals are typically encountered during the day, vitamin C is usually incorporated into morning routines. You can use a vitamin C serum at night, but it will likely negatively interact with other active ingredients typically used at night, such as retinol or AHAs. You do not need to apply vitamin C serum twice a day.

After cleansing, toning, and hydrating with an essence or another serum, layer your vitamin C serum before finishing up with moisturizer and SPF. There are many reasons why you have to wear UVA/UVB protection every single day, but SPF and vitamin C really are two peas in a pod—both work to lessen the effects of oxidative stress on your skin. Your vitamin C serum doesn’t have to work as hard when combined with SPF, and vice versa.

I believe there is no such thing as a bad time to change your hair color (I know, I’m toxic), but springtime is the time. Winter feels like a never-ending time suck of the same sh*t every single day, so when we finally get those little glimpses of better days ahead, changing your hair color is genuinely the least rash thing you could do. Also, I’m just saying: Spring hair colors are always superior.

Whether a little lightness around your face will make you feel like you just had your very own adult spring break or you’re ready to look unrecognizable (my kind of person), spring’s hottest hair colors have you in mind. Get ready for trendy tones, bold colors, and low-maintenance options alike.

1. Strawberry

If you’re looking for a bold change and want to get in on a major trend, strawberry tones are it. “This color is so in right now—I saw it a lot during New York Fashion Week,” said Brittaney Danyel, StyleSeat hairstylist and colorist in San Diego. “The peachy undertones are flattering on every skin tone. If you want to be even bolder, you can go for a more vibrant peachy red that will really brighten up your features.” Luckily, this trend can go many different ways, as you can go a little darker for a more “strawberry brunette” look (very cool girl) or lighter for the classic strawberry blonde.

2. Honey Bronde

“Bronde” is the perfect way to get a bright color without sacrificing the health of your hair. The pandemic showed everyone the importance of low-maintenance, easy color, and we’re seeing a major interest in prioritizing hair health over bold, bright color changes. This hair looks like it was kissed by the sun, thanks to the warm, golden tones throughout. Instead of the ashy, gray tones of the past, “sun-kissed hair that effortlessly blends with your natural roots is the way to go,” Danyel suggested.

3. Muted Pinks

Source: @lanacondor

“This spring and summer, I think we’ll see a lot of pink hair, but more specifically, mauve,” Danyel added. “I find that this ashy, muted, toned color always makes a comeback every other season. It’s a fun color for the warmer months, but it’s nothing too bright or crazy.” You can add this color to your blonde hair with a semi-permanent color-depositing conditioner, or if you go the salon route, you can use a color conditioner to keep your color vibrant as long as possible.

4. “Expensive Brunette”

Source: @haileybieber

This color made the internet rounds after our favorite blondes like Sofia Richie, Hailey Bieber, and Gigi Hadid went back to their (literal) roots and opted for a deeper tone this winter. But experts are predicting we’ll keep seeing this trend through spring and beyond. While you might normally think it’s inherent to go lighter for spring and summer, this deeper color feels chic and different—which is everything we’re looking for after a winter of staying inside. But if you already went “expensive brunette” and want to change it up a bit, Danyel suggested adding money pieces to the front to brighten the face while keeping the brunette throughout the rest of the hair.

5. Baby Blonde

Source: @goldenbarbie

But don’t get me wrong: Blonde will never go out of style. This year, we’re seeing it as platinum as it gets. This color isn’t golden or ashy—it’s a true, neutral blonde. Think ’90s Pamela Anderson (or Lily James’s 2022 rendition in Pam and Tommy). Keep your hair the right tone by making an appointment with your colorist to tone in between color appointments and using a purple shampoo once a week diluted with your favorite shampoo (although purple hair would look pretty cute…).

6. Caramel Balayage

The dimensional brunette is no new concept, but it’s a foolproof way to change up your natural color without making a major change. If you want to go lighter in the springtime, this adds brightness and warmth. And because this is where my brain goes, imagine how good it would look with your hair in a braid. I rest my case.

Don’t try this one at home—invest in a good hairstylist who can add lightness without completely frying your hair (it’s possible).

7. Shadow Root

Source: Getty Images

There’s an age-old adage somewhere that says the more effortless something looks, the better (and always the more effort it actually takes to achieve). The same could be said about hair, as we’re luckily entering an era where low-maintenance cuts and colors that don’t require bimonthly salon visits to keep looking good reign supreme. The shadow root is the antithesis to the hair we used to look for, and that’s why we love it. It’s meant to give you lightness while also looking as natural as possible, and once your hair grows out, you don’t have to wear a hat around town while you wait for a spot in your stylist’s chair again.

8. Face-Framing

Source: Getty Images

The last two years, bold face-framing pieces were on everyone from Charli D’Amelio to SZA to Bella Hadid. And while that trend is definitely not leaving Gen Z anytime soon, if you’re into a more natural approach to your hair, lighter face-framing pieces are hot too. This adds so much brightness to your face and can be achieved on all hair colors, types, cuts, and face shapes.

9. Jet Black

Source: @dualipa

An inky, jet black is sexy and special—and a very unlikely choice for the spring and summertime, which is exactly why we love it. Keep it shiny with a hair oil and always remember to use a heat protectant, as excess heat can dull hair color over time (the more you know!).
