February 2023

I may be a fashion editor by day, but a little secret of mine is that I’m also a massive beauty lover. My TikTok is entirely composed of makeup influencers trying new beauty products, my vanity is full of the hottest new releases, and I simply can’t resist the excitement a new product arriving at my doorstep gives me.

Over the past few months, I’ve tried dozens of new beauty products. From the controversial ones (looking at you, L’Oreal mascara), to the ones that I had to hunt down because they were sold out everywhere, I’ve tested more than I can count. I’ve come to find that the majority of products fall in the category of being good, but not good enough to actually be memorable—but these are not those products.

Of all the viral beauty products I’ve tried over the past few months, these are the ones that have gotten the coveted Holy Grail status for me.

Makeup by Mario

SurrealSkin Liquid Foundation

Full disclaimer: I have very, very dry skin. That being said, this is hands-down my favorite foundation I have ever tried. Many TikToks went around when this launched saying it was sparkly, but on the skin, it is not literally whatsoever. Usually my skin looks dry by the end of the day no matter what I do, but not when I'm wearing this. It provides perfect, long-lasting, hydrating coverage that I can't get enough of. I already bought my summer shade out of fear of it being out of stock—it's that good. If you have normal or dry skin, I promise, you will absolutely love this.

Charlotte Tilbury

Matte Beauty Blush Wand

All of Charlotte Tilbury's beauty wands are constantly out of stock because of how good they are, so when I saw they were extending them to this matte blush, I was ecstatic. I've been a die-hard fan of the contour wand for years, and this is just as good, but in blush form. While it is technically matte, I would say it's more of a satin finish on the skin (it looks like a natural flush and never appears chalky), and gives you a perfect, healthy wash of color that is just the right amount of pigmented. It's very pigmented, so you don't need a ton of product, but it isn't so pigmented that you have to be too careful with it either. I've been alternating between the shades Pillow Talk and Dream Pop, and I literally cannot get enough. If you're in the market for a new blush, I'd pick this up before they sell out.

Saie

Glowy Super Gel

I've been using the Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops since before Alix Earle was even in college, and I like this literally a million times more than them. I use the shade Sunglow, and it just gives the most beautiful sheer, glowy warmth to the skin. I use this both on makeup-free days and underneath makeup, and love it equally either way. It's a very thin, gel-like consistency, and looks glowy without looking sparkly or shimmery. I'm on my third bottle of this, and am praying the TikTok girlies will stop selling it out so I can still get my hands on it.

Charlotte Tilbury

Airbrush Brightening Powder

If you're a fan of the cult-favorite Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush powder, you're going to absolutely love this brightening version. It makes your under-eyes look smooth, airbrushed, and perfected. Whenever I'm doing my makeup and have it under one eye but haven't applied it to the other yet, I'm literally in awe of how bright it make my under eyes look.

Merit

Bronze Balm

This bronzer stick went viral after being marketed as "the easiest bronzer ever," and I can confidently say that I do think it is in fact the easiest bronzer ever. I bought it for my mom who was previously scared of bronzer for Christmas, and even she's in love with it. It blends completely seamlessly into the most beautiful, dewy wash of bronziness, but doesn't disappear like other easy-to-blend bronzers do. On both bare skin and over foundation, it's the most realistic looking bronzer I've ever tried—and I've tried a lot. I love it so much that I bought a second one to live in my purse so I can have access to it whenever I need it.

Too Faced

Cloud Crush Blurring Blush in Candy Crush

This blush went viral for being a dupe for the Dior blush that sold out last year, but I don't think it's a dupe—I think it's much, much better. While the Dior blush looks a little dry on me and fades quickly, this one gives my cheeks the most beautiful bubble gum pink flush that will last until I wash my makeup off at night. I haven't been a powder blush user for quite some time, but this one converted me back, and I can't see myself straying from it anytime soon.

Dieux

Instant Angel Moisturizer

I waxed poetic about this moisturizer in my full review of it back in the fall, and my obsession with it is still going strong. Not only am I on my third tube of it, but I ended up buying the jumbo version because I don't want to go a single day without it. This moisturizer has quite literally transformed my dry skin into actually being somewhat normal for the first time in my life. It's rich, fragrance free, and doesn't leave any stickiness or residue behind—just glowing, hydrated, healthy skin. I recently went on prescription retinol, which made me terrified for my sensitive, already dry skin, and I literally had no down time or retinol uglies because I used this moisturizer after applying it. The best part? It's under $50.

L'Oreal

Telescopic Lift Mascara

I bought this mascara from the checkout area of Ulta (gets me every time) on a whim a couple months ago, long before the TikTok drama about it (IYKYK). When I started using it, I knew it would go viral. I believe this is hands-down the best drugstore mascara—or honestly, mascara, period—that you can buy. It makes my eyelashes look long, fanned-out, and full, but never clumpy. When I use this I still am consistently in shock by how good my eyelashes look. Sometimes I even think my eyelashes look toolong with it on—and what does that tell you? This has single-handedly beat out all my other favorite mascaras at one-third of the price.

Henry Rose

Jake's House

To be fair, this has not gone viral, but I'm including it on this list because it should. This is, by far, my favorite perfume I have ever smelled in my life. I tried three scents from Henry Rose and they all are truly incredible: complex, unique, long-lasting. But this one just has that quality of *good smell* (kind of like Glossier You does), that makes you want to douse yourself in it. I got the travel size of this, but the second I'm near the bottom, will be ordering the full size. If you're on the hunt for a unique, clean scent, this will be your new favorite. (I would also recommend Windows Down and Sheep's Clothing.)

If there’s one thing that’s consistent about me, it’s that my skin is gonna be both sensitive and oily. It certainly has its upsides at times, (tight, dry skin? I don’t know her) but when I want to be a matte queen, it’s a struggle. I was on accutane as a teen and as an adult, I try to control both acne and oil with prescription-grade retinol. Perhaps you can relate. I’ve spent years trying out different types of powder finishes — from Physician’s Formula to Bare Minerals to Covergirl Clean Matte — and I swear I’ve found a long-lasting setting powder that shot to the top of my list. And truly, I cannot gatekeep this from my fellow oily babes.

The Powder

ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starr

Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder

2 shades available

I first tried ONE/SIZE Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder by Patrick Starrr as a sample in a summer Sephora kit I’d purchased. When I applied it at the end of my full face of makeup, I was floored by the results. I am not being overdramatic when I tell you it made my skin look flawless. Okay, I thought. This looks great. But I’m about to spend the day outside in the Los Angeles sun, so I bet it doesn’t last long.

Oh, how wrong I was. This setting powder is baby fine, lightweight, and actually long-lasting. And if you don’t believe me, believe these reviews. I’m used to having to use oil blotting sheets or carrying a powder compact with me to touch up my face during the day, but I didn’t have to do that with this product. When I got home from hanging out with friends, I was genuinely surprised to see that it had held up. And as someone who will break out into a rash or acne if I so much as touch the wrong kind of product, this matte powder hasn’t given me any problems whatsoever.

Application

A little truly does go a long way with this product. I found that roughly one makeup brush dab of this product is enough to set my makeup and give me a matte finish without compromising the look of my foundation or blush. Plus, I love that it doesn’t feel heavy on my skin.

The Formula

So, what’s the magic behind this setting powder? I’m no scientist, but the ingredients reveal that it contains “performance powder microspheres” that gives you a smooth and matte finish. It’s a very fine powder, which helps blur fine lines, and its “surface-treated pigments” help it adhere to your skin. Bonus: it’s free of sulfates, parabens, and formaldehydes and is vegan, fragrance-free, and cruelty-free. As I mentioned before, I have extremely sensitive skin and ingredients are key. On this note (and like, every other one), this powder is a win.

The Shade Range

Currently this O/S setting powder is available in two shades: Universal Translucent (fair to medium) and Dark Deep (for dark skin tones). So while it’s not the most expansive shade range among setting powders, there are two shades available that should work for most users—especially given the product’s translucent nature.

The Final Verdict

The O/S Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder is $34 for 1.2oz, which is a little pricey. However, you really do get what you pay for. I truthfully hope it never gets discontinued since it’s become a game-changer in my makeup routine. It’s gotten a lot of hype for good reason, and I don’t think there’s anything else out there that can beat its phenomenal results.  The only downside is the package, which many others have also griped about, as it’s sometimes difficult to coax out of the container. But if you suffer from oily skin like me, a frustrating package is so worth it for the result this powder provides.

TL;DR: Yes, you need a vitamin C serum in your skincare routine. You’ve likely heard of the magical ingredient or maybe even toyed around with testing one, but did you know it’s one of dermatologists’ most-recommended ingredients to add to your skincare routine?

Vitamin C is one of the most universally effective and well-rounded active ingredients in skincare. No matter what type of issues you have with your skin—dullness, hyperpigmentation, redness, fine lines, lack of firmness—vitamin C will yield some impressive improvements to the appearance of your complexion once you commit to daily application of it.

What is Vitamin C?

Just like the vitamin C you take to stave off sickness during cold and flu season, vitamin C in skincare acts as a powerful antioxidant against environmental free radicals that aim to wreak havoc on your face. Vitamin C is used for brightening skin, fading dark spots left behind after breakouts, and establishing a more even skin tone.

How exactly does it do this? The visible effects of oxidative stress, a state that our skin goes into when there are not enough antioxidants to combat the damage caused by free radicals, can present itself as sallow skin tone, redness, and generally unwell-looking skin. Free radicals are created when our cells encounter damaging agents in our environment such as air pollution, vehicle emissions, cigarette smoke, dirt, and UVA/UVB rays.

Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Extensive oxidative stress can weaken your skin; therefore, it can accelerate aging as well as hyperpigmentation caused by post-acne scarring or sun damage. Vitamin C is not just a potent topical antioxidant; it is one of the more versatile active ingredients, as it also stimulates the skin’s production of collagen and is naturally anti-inflammatory—good news for people who also suffer from acne, oiliness, or blackheads or those who want some anti-aging properties.

Basically, everyone benefits from vitamin C. There is definitely a lot of “fluff” in skincare that you could do without, but if you’re focusing on youth preservation, calming redness and inflammation, fading dark spots, or just wanting that elusive “glow” that only Glossier models seem to naturally possess, you really shouldn’t skip vitamin C.

How to Choose a Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is surprisingly complicated to formulate in a way that guarantees its effectiveness. The active ingredients needed to make a potent serum are extremely sensitive to oxidation and light exposure, so the packaging of these products is just as important as the formula itself.

A few of the most popular forms of vitamin C in skincare are ascorbic ccid (also L-ascorbic acid), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate. If you are looking at the ingredients list of a supposed vitamin C product and none of the aforementioned are listed in the first couple ingredients, the product is not potent enough to show results.

L-ascorbic acid is the most commonly used vitamin C derivative used in skincare, but with a pH of 3.5, it is also the most acidic varietal. Most skin types can tolerate L-ascorbic acid, but if you are particularly sensitive, then consider formulas with any of the other commonly used derivatives—just know it will take longer to see the desired results.

Ideally, your vitamin C serum will be packaged in an air-tight container with a pump that is either an opaque or amber-hued bottle to avoid oxidation and light exposure. A lot of vitamin C serums come with pipet applicators, which unfortunately allow for daily air exposure. While this is not ideal, it does not necessarily mean that it will be a bad product.

With every vitamin C serum, it is important to understand that there is an expiration date on the product. Take note of the characteristics of your serum when you first begin using it. Once your product changes color, texture, smell, or becomes cloudy, you need to discontinue use immediately, as it has oxidized and therefore expired. Vitamin C serums typically have a shelf life of around six months to a year after opened.

How to Use Vitamin C Serum

Because the environmental aggressors that create free radicals are typically encountered during the day, vitamin C is usually incorporated into morning routines. You can use a vitamin C serum at night, but it will likely negatively interact with other active ingredients typically used at night, such as retinol or AHAs. You do not need to apply vitamin C serum twice a day.

After cleansing, toning, and hydrating with an essence or another serum, layer your vitamin C serum before finishing up with moisturizer and SPF. There are many reasons why you have to wear UVA/UVB protection every single day, but SPF and vitamin C really are two peas in a pod—both work to lessen the effects of oxidative stress on your skin. Your vitamin C serum doesn’t have to work as hard when combined with SPF, and vice versa.

The post Dermatologists Agree: Everyone Should Be Using Vitamin C appeared first on The Everygirl.

In a recent Slack channel, our team was discussing the ever-present Q of how on Earth Emily Cooper traveled to Paris with all of her Chanel bags. To my surprise, my fellow colleagues had a lot to say about their luggage always being over 50 pounds. I’ve come close, but that’s never happened to me. This launched into a whole discussion in which I experienced a massive bout of imposter syndrome as I almost exclusively travel with a carry-on. How on Earth can I possibly be a Beauty Editor who manages to travel with a carry-on? Should I change professions?

Nope, I’ve just learned how to pack beauty products in the absolute most efficient way. (I get to keep my job!) Packing beauty products in a travel bag in a way that won’t make TSA hate you is a challenge I’ve managed to defeat. I love products, and I refuse to live without my 10-step skincare routine just because I’m traveling. Heck, I need my skincare while on a crowded plane or in a new environment even more than I need it at home. Over time, I’ve mastered packing a carry-on with all of my beauty essentials—no checking required. Ahead: my biggest packing tips, as a lover of beauty products.

1. Separate Makeup and Skincare/Haircare

If possible, forgo using a giant bag to carry every single toiletry under the sun, and instead, opt for smaller bags for each. For one, think about how you are when you get to your destination. Do you just dump everything out, or do you usually work out of your makeup bag? For me, I usually dump all of my skin and haircare onto the bathroom counter of wherever I’m going, but I try to keep all of my makeup in a bag. I usually won’t do my makeup in the bathroom (rarely the best light), so it doesn’t make sense to keep it there. This makes my life easier when I get to a destination, but it’s even more necessary if you don’t want to piss off TSA when you travel with 3847238 products.

I always like to keep my makeup and skincare with me on the plane (they’re my prized possessions, after all), but sticking a gigantic, heavy bag in my already-small personal item is a no-go. Having two smaller bags always makes more sense, and if I need to dig into them for any reason (like a mid-flight face mask?), I don’t have to dig to the bottom of a bag to find what I need. Contrarily, I rarely need anything more than my mini dry shampoo, a hair tie, and a brush on the plane, so my non-liquid hair products can be stuck in my suitcase. Figure out what works best to configure your products for you.

2. Use A Clear Bag

We already know this, but I’m not talking about the clear Ziploc bags that TSA recommends. Instead, get a 1 qt.-sized reusable clear makeup bag. First of all, the ability to reuse this over and over again will save you from having to make that dreaded pre-vacation trip to Target to get sandwich bags. But these often are a lot less finicky when you’re trying to stuff as many products as possible into them. I’ve broken too many Ziploc bags to count, but I’ve never had a problem stuffing these to the brim.

Fitting all of your products into the bag can be somewhat of a game of Tetris, but I find that I can always fit a lot more in one of these bags than a sandwich bag (and TSA has never yelled at me).

3. Opt for powders for exfoliants, dry shampoos, and cleansers

If it comes in a powder instead of a liquid, guarantee I’m bringing it. I use this hack to be able to bring all of my extra-very-important beauty steps without sacrificing the precious space in my 1 qt. liquids bag. Exfoliators, cleansers, body washes, serums—a lot of products come in powders nowadays that you can just mix with water to get your desired effect. I also opt for powders over aerosol cans for dry shampoo and volumizing/texturizing spray. This has helped me tenfold, as I can stick these in my carry-on suitcase without having to worry about them.

Some of my favorites:

4. Bring Samples

If you’re anything like me, you have a stash of beauty samples stockpiled somewhere in your home, and traveling is the best time to use them. I bring all of my sample shampoos and conditioners, foundations, primers, perfumes, cleansers, and more any time I leave my house. These take up practically no space and are perfect for short trips when you’ll only need to wash your face a handful of times. I hoard all of my sample perfumes for this exact reason; there’s no reason to ever bring a full-size perfume with you on a trip.

Similarly, before any trip I go on that I want to look my best without having to bring full bottles of my expensive primer, foundation, or concealer, I take a trip to my local Sephora and get samples. One foundation sample will last me about a week’s worth of applications (especially with a dewy, spreadable foundation—Armani Beauty Luminous Silk is my go-to for this). I always make sure to put these in a tiny Ziploc in the event of spillage (which has surprisingly not happened to me yet), but this hack is a winner every single time.

5. Buy Refillable Travel Sizes

Having refillable travel-size bottles on hand for your favorite cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and more will not only make the days before your trip easier but ensure you have the best skin and hair you could ask for on your trip. The key is to fill as much as you actually think you’ll use. If you’re only going away for three days, you probably won’t use up a full 3 oz. bottle of shampoo and conditioner, but for a two-week Hawaii vacation, you might want to pack as much as you can. If you get moldable refills, this will help save you a lot of space, but if anything, avoiding any extra weight is helpful.

Kitsch

Refillable Flat Pouch Travel Bottles Set

I'm obsessed with these refillable travel pouches because they lie flat, making them easy to stack in a liquids bag and take up barely any space.

6. Coordinate With Your Travelers

Not everyone on your girls’ trip needs to bring their own personal Dyson Airwrap, flat iron, 1 in. curling iron, hairspray, and dry shampoo. If you’re going on a trip with other people, coordinate with each other before packing so everyone isn’t bringing doubles. Have one person bring a flat iron, one bring a blow dryer, one brings a curling iron, and another bring dry shampoo. There’s no reason you all need to be bringing the same products. Similarly, if you are the one packing the shampoo and conditioner, offer to share with another traveler, and then you can borrow one of their products. Somehow, I always end up the one who brings everything, but then I get extra space in someone’s bag for more snacks. Win, win.

7. Use A Contacts Case

Arguably my most genius hack of all time (you’re welcome), I keep contact solution cases in my travel drawer at all times to use for filling up travel sizes of foundation, concealer, powder—any makeup products I own that I don’t need to bring the full container of. A contacts case is the perfect size to fit enough makeup for a few days, and it saves me tons of space in my liquids bag (or overall makeup bag in general). Will your shelfie look as cute? Prob not, but the space-saving makes up for it.

8. Downsize the Products You Bring

Don’t get me wrong: I am not telling you to skip steps here, but if one product can do the job of two steps, I’m bringing that instead. For example, I don’t know if I’ve ever brought a hairspray traveling because my texture spray gives me the hold I need. In the same vein, if I bring a dry shampoo, I sometimes won’t also bring a texture spray. I won’t bring a vitamin C mask if I’m already bringing my vitamin C serum. I avoid bringing a clear lip gloss if I’m already tucking a lip mask or oil in my bag to wear on the plane. In any area I can downsize and use the same product for two uses, I do it. Then, when I want to bring three very different foundations for different coverage levels and uses, I can.

9. Opt for Solids

When in doubt, grab a solid version of your favorite products and call it a day. I swear by a solid perfume for traveling, and shampoo and cleanser bars were practically made to make TSA agents happy.
