May 2021

A few years ago, I moved to a new state for work—and I did not anticipate how difficult it would be to find a new hairstylist. As a Black woman, I know not every stylist is trained in how to properly style and care for Black hair, so the process can be difficult. Add to that wanting specific styles like braids or sew-ins, and you’re searching for different types of stylists depending on the hairstyle. Without a recommendation on who to go to, I turned to Instagram and searched hashtags to find a stylist to do the braids I had in mind. Upon coming across different Instagram pages and websites, I noticed a common theme: rules. Deposit required, no kids or extra guests, must come with hair already washed and blow-dried, only accept bookings on the 20th of the month from 2-4—these were just some examples of what I saw.

Lately, it seems like so many hairstylists have a list of rules you need to follow to book with them. Whether you’re looking for braids, weaves, or a silk press, booking an appointment with a hairstylist can sometimes feel like jumping through hoops. I talked to my longtime hairstylist, Shanique of StylezUNeak for some insight, and she shared her biggest pet peeves and why some of those rules are necessary.

Shanique recognizes that a list of rules as a first impression can turn some clients away, so she chooses to communicate her policies during the booking process. While some of these rules may be annoying, understand that they are usually in place to protect the stylist from being taken advantage of by clients. Most of these rules are based on respect and communication, so keep these in mind and you’ll be all set to book your next appointment.

1. Indecisiveness

“I can’t stand when a client waits until they sit in my chair to tell me they want to switch styles.”

I’m sure we’ve all been there: we decide on our next hairstyle only to come across a picture on Instagram or Pinterest and change our mind at the last minute. While this might seem OK as long as it’s before you get your hair done, it can become a burden on your stylist. If you’re booked for a certain style, switching to something else might mean a bigger time commitment or a product your stylist might not have prepared for you. Jumbo box braids might take two hours, but medium faux locs could take five. Trying to switch styles last minute may affect your stylist’s schedule and creates an extra headache for them.

This has resulted in some stylists implementing rules that you cannot make any changes once the service is booked. I recommend waiting to book until you’re positive about which style you want or communicate that you’re unsure at the time of booking. This allows your stylist to know ahead of time you may switch and she or he may be able to help you decide. If you do need to switch last minute, communicate asap but be prepared if the answer is no.

2. Being Late or Not Showing Up

“It’s so disrespectful of my time when a client is late.”

Sometimes things happen and you can’t help that you’re running a few minutes late or have to cancel. Be considerate of your stylist’s time and communicate that you will be a few minutes late or have to cancel as soon as possible. Most stylists are understanding of a one-time thing, but if it becomes a habit it shows that you don’t respect their time or their business. Respect goes both ways, and a stylist who is never ready for you at your set appointment time should have consequences as well.

Late fees or requiring a deposit for the service is the most common rule I see on a hairstylists’ page, and it is one I agree with. Most stylists I’ve seen will either charge a set amount like $20 or $50 or a percentage of the service with the deposit going toward the total cost of service. I have no problem paying a deposit because I know this is the only insurance the stylist has that I’ll actually show up. When booking a style like braids or faux locs that can take anywhere from 4-8 hours, a stylist would be crazy for not charging a deposit. If the person doesn’t show up for that appointment, that’s an appointment that could have gone to another client and a day of pay gone for the stylist.

3. Price haggling

This isn’t Target, you can’t price match”

I was surprised to hear that people will haggle or try to negotiate the price when booking a service. Asking for a different price or telling a stylist their prices are too expensive and that “x person does it for x price” is disrespectful and a waste of time.

If you ask a stylist their price and it’s too expensive for you, the only appropriate response is to find a new hairstylist or choose a style within your budget. Always find out the price upfront so you’re not surprised after getting your hair done, but if the price is out of your budget just respectfully take your business elsewhere. The stylist is the expert who knows what their time and effort are worth for each style.

4. Requesting a style that doesn’t fit your length or texture

“I’m not trying to be tagged in a ‘What I asked for vs. What I got’ post”

Sometimes people will see a picture on Instagram or Pinterest and decide they want that style without being realistic. If you have super thin, straight hair and you show your stylist a picture of a kinky curly bob, unless it’s a wig, there’s no amount of magic your stylist can perform to make your hair look like that. Be realistic in your expectations by finding inspiration pictures of hairstyles with similar textures to yours.

5. Asking a stylist for an exact replica of a style they had by another stylist

“I’m sorry, I don’t copy and paste. If you want it to look like that person’s work, book with them.”

Describing to your stylist exactly how someone else did your hair and how you want it done the exact same way is just setting yourself up for disappointment. Hairstylists view their work as a form of artwork and many do not want to make it look like someone else’s work. You wouldn’t go to Taco Bell and ask for Burger King; they’re going to tell you sorry, but you can’t have it your way.

6. When a client asks for my professional opinion and then doesn’t listen

I can say I am guilty of this offense, but I have learned my lesson. I remember seeing silky shoulder lengths and passion twists on Pinterest and falling in love with the style. I decided they would be perfect for my upcoming trip to Disney and booked my appointment. When I showed my stylist the picture of what I wanted, she told me she hates this style because it doesn’t last. She recommended another style, but I wanted to try something new and decided to stick with the passion twists. Spoiler alert: I should have listened. A week later, my hair was frizzy and literally untwisting. No hair was unraveling because the ends were sealed, but the twists weren’t as tight, and the style only lasted about two and a half weeks. I felt like I had wasted my money. When I went to my stylist a few months later for another style, she asked, with a smirk, how I liked the passion twists, I laughed and told her she was right and I will always listen to her from now on.

The post My Hairstylist Told Me Her Biggest Pet Peeves (And How to Not Make Them) appeared first on The Everygirl.

Being the beauty lovers we are at The Everygirl HQ, we wanted to share a different side of our beauty routines: our empties. They’re the products from beyond the grave that we’ve completely used up. The concept is simple: show everyone what’s in your trash and talk about if you loved it, if you’ll buy it again, and how long it took you to use up. Every month, our editors will share a few of their own empties—from skin, hair, and makeup products to candles and vitamins and home items—and give our unfiltered review on each of them. Some of them we’ll love and need to repurchase ASAP… and some we’ll celebrate finally finishing them up. If you’ve ever wondered what our absolute favorites (and not-so-favorites) are, this is the right place to be.

Glossier

Stretch Concealer

For about a year, I barely even touched my makeup drawer. Now that I’m getting back to a normal routine, I’ve been loving an easy, light coverage makeup routine that makes me look alive, and this product has helped tremendously. It’s the perfect solution to brightening my under eyes and lightly covering up my blemishes, but at the same time, it feels just like skin. I’m about to order another one now that I’m getting low and potentially looking to purchase a darker shade to use as a bronzer as well!

— Alex Pizarro, Editorial Assistant

CearaVe

Hydrating Facial Cleanser

I use a lot of aggressive skin care treatments (prescription retinol, at-home peels) so I need a very gentle, normalizing face wash. I’ve tried everything from expensive top-of-the-line cleansers to budget-friendly drugstore brands, and I’ve found this to be the best combination of being gentle while still leaving my skin feeling clean and refreshed. I’ve already reordered.

— Elle Kennedy-Fischer, CFO/COO

Sephora Collection

Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner

This is the only eyeliner that I’ve been specifically complimented on. Not “your eye makeup looks great,” but “your eyeliner looks fantastic!” It’s super blend-able and then once it sets, does not move. I use the dark brown color for under eye/waterline because it’s not as harsh as the black but still defines the eye. I always reorder before I run out so I always have it on hand.

— Elle Kennedy-Fischer, CFO/COO

Tanologist

Self-Tan Mousse

I’ve been self tanning for years, and have tried just about every product you could name, both expensive and not. Of all the St. Tropez and Loving Tan and super-pricey body self-tanning products I’ve tried, this is by far my favorite, and it’s half the price. I’ve gone through bottles and bottles of this stuff and it’s always an immediate repurchase for me. It works perfectly every time and gives me a natural-looking, even, glowing result.

Cinema Secrets

Pro Cosmetics Professional Brush Cleaner

One of my absolute least favorite chores was always cleaning my makeup brushes—until I came across this. I’ve been using it for about a year, and it has absolutely changed the game for me. I dip my brushes into the absolute smallest amount you can imagine, and it absorbs into the bristles and makes all of the makeup and grime in them come off with a few swipes on a paper towel. It’s one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever experienced and makes me want to wash my makeup brushes for fun. The best part? The brushes are dry within a few minutes. I could not possibly recommend this stuff more.

— Madelie Galassi, Fashion Content Manager

OTHERLAND

Rattan Sandalwood Vegan Candle

I’m not sure I’ve ever repurchased a candle. By the time you finish something up, you’re ready to try a new one. This is the first candle I’ve ever had that I feel like my apartment isn’t the same without it. This has the best scent: it’s a blend of sandalwood and santal, which to me, means it smells like a fancy perfume (similar to Le Labo Santal 33, but not exact). Every single time someone comes into my home, they rave about how good this candle smells. Plus, it’s lasted me since August 2020, so the burn time is legit. Otherland candles are my absolute favorites, and to say I’m obsessed with this scent is an understatement. It’s seasonless—trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

— Beth Gillette, Beauty Content Manager

La Roche Posay

Double Repair Face Moisturizer SPF 30

I am that one person who asks, “Are you wearing sunscreen?” Unprompted. Without context. Just looking out for you. I searched high and low for a moisturizer that had SPF that looked good under makeup and didn’t leave me with oily skin by noon. The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer with SPF answered all of my prayers and has a permanent spot in my skincare routine. It leaves my skin feeling moisturized, I rarely get oily when I wear it, and I know I’m getting a little bit of added sun protection, even if I’m just sitting in my apartment all day.

MAC Cosmetics

Eye Kohl Eyeliner Pencil

Remember that line in Mean Girls? “One time I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops. So I bought army pants and flip flops.” I read that Meghan Markle loves the MAC Eye Kohl Eyeliner in Teddy… so I bought the Mac Eye Kohl Eyeliner in Teddy. I love a good dramatic winged liner, but I also love more subtle makeup looks that enhance my natural features. This MAC eyeliner has an almost imperceptible shimmer that really makes my eyes pop—without being the focal point. If I want to go for a no-makeup look, this is the first product I reach for. I’ll repurchase it again and again.

— Garri Chaverst, Managing Editor

Versed

Acne-Control Body Mist

I am influenced by our reviews all the time. When I read this story in particular, though, it was game over. This is the product I had been searching for FOREVER. Even though I always shower immediately after my workouts, I occasionally deal with breakouts on my body. Since I’ve been using this spray after my showers, I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in my skin’s appearance. The breakouts are a thing of the past and I’ve even noticed some slight improvement in my dark spots and hyperpigmentation. This one’s a real winner for me.

— Garri Chaverst, Managing Editor

Erborian

BB Cream Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20

This BB cream is like an Instagram filter IRL: it never fails to make my skin look smooth and flawless. As a result, it’s become a go-to item in my makeup bag over the past few months, whether I’m heading out or just want to feel good during the work day—I slather it on prior to most of my Zoom calls and instantly look more put together, even when I’m wearing minimal makeup otherwise. A bonus? The product contains SPF 20, and I think it smells pretty darn good.

— Sarah Lyon, Contributing Editor

Ellis Brooklyn

Bee Eau De Parfum

I recently received a sample size of this perfume after making another beauty purchase, and while I didn’t know what to expect, I can now say that I’m fully sold on this fragrance and spritz it on practically every day. It has a sexy scent with touches of spicy vanilla, and I know it’s going to become one of my go-to’s for date nights. And the Ellis Brooklyn line happens to have been started by a Brooklyn mom who is a beauty columnist for the New York Times—hello, goals.

— Sarah Lyon, Contributing Editor

The Ordinary

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

I love every single The Ordinary product that I’ve tried, and this one is no exception. I use this serum at night (and I use their hyaluronic acid serum in the morning), and I can definitely see a difference in the texture of my skin. It helps even everything out and reduces the look of acne scars and overall bumpy texture. I already repurchased this one, and I don’t see it leaving my routine anytime soon. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it’s literally SIX. DOLLARS.

— Jessica Welsh, Junior Graphic Designer and Assistant Editor

Benefit Cosmetics

Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara

I’ve been a longtime hater of high-end mascaras, simply because I know that I can get one for less than $10 at Target that delivers results I love. However, my mom kindly gifted me a set of different high-end mascaras to try for Christmas, and I just finished my tube of Benefit’s Roller Lash. I liked this mascara a lot, and I think I might change my ways and purchase it again. It’s lightweight and looks natural, but still gives my lashes the boost they need.

— Jessica Welsh, Junior Graphic Designer and Assistant Editor

Method Body

Body Wash Pure Peace

I’m pretty picky about my body washes. I don’t like ones that are too heavy or too scented, but I still want a nice smell that feels luxurious and relaxing in the shower. I also have never been loyal to a body wash—I always like to switch it up and try different ones. But I just finished a bottle of this Method body wash in the scent “Pure Peace,” and I think I might’ve found myself a perfect match. Not only is it the perfect subtle scent, it feels hydrating on my skin and like it’s actually doing something, which not all body washes do.

The post The Only Candle Our Editor Has Ever Repurchased + 13 Other Products We Finished This Month appeared first on The Everygirl.

After a winter filled with red wine, hot cocoa, and lots and lots of coffee, my teeth needed a refresh. I had whitened my teeth in the past, both professionally at the dentist and at home using strips. I absolutely loved my results but hated the inconvenience and price that came along with teeth whitening. On one of my oh-too frequent Target runs, I grabbed the Arc Precision Applicator Teeth Whitening Pen and decided to put it to the test. The product is $20 and promises whiter teeth in just two weeks. And after years of attempting to use strips that slide off or hurt my teeth, I was interested in trying something new.

About My Teeth:

I must start by saying I am obsessed with teeth. I have had braces and Invisalign, I’ve had my teeth professionally whitened, I’ve had my little gaps filled in, I’ve had them filed down so they line up evenly, I brush and floss and use mouthwash, and I have never missed a cleaning. That being said, adding a daily whitening pen to my routine was the next obvious step! I have a few tiny spots of discoloration from braces and Invisalign that I was hoping this pen could aid.

About the Product:

The $20.49, 4 mL pen claims to whiten teeth and help remove stains. The packaging and website info says it uses the same ingredients dentists use to whiten patients’ teeth. Specifically, the ingredient list includes hydrogen peroxide, which is often used as a whitening agent. The brand also has a whole line including strips and toothpastes for all of your whitening needs. They recommend using the teeth whitening pen twice a day for 14 days for best results.

Application:

Every day for a little over a week, I brushed on the solution from the whitening pen after brushing and flossing morning and night. The clear gel is a sticky consistency and easily latches onto the surface of the teeth. This product, much like other whitening pens or strips, takes a minute to dry. The brand recommends waiting a full 60 seconds after application to dry. When I apply it, I put on my biggest smile and fan the product in an attempt to make it dry faster. Whether this works, I am unsure, but I still do it every time. Although I applied this morning and night, this pen can be taken on the go and applied anytime throughout the day. Unlike whitening strips, this product can be used in a matter of minutes, and you’re done. No more waiting around or constantly having to readjust the strips. Just apply and go!

Ease of Use:

Besides the drying time, this product is incredibly convenient and easy to use. Just twist the pen one full turn and apply the product directly to your teeth. The twist on the package has two lines you match up so that you are getting the full recommended amount each time you apply. I love the brush applicator because you can really get into all the nooks and crannies of your teeth that strips can’t. Since the clear gel pumps out of the white bristles, you can easily see where you are applying the product to make sure each tooth is evenly coated.

Side-Effects:

My favorite part about this product is that it’s pain-free—but seriously! I have tried many brands of whitening strips in the past and they always hurt my teeth, especially my bottom ones. Oftentimes after using strips, my teeth are sensitive to any cold drinks and have a slight throbbing sensation. With this pen, I didn’t feel any sort of discomfort during or after the whole time I was using it. When I first applied it, it just feels like putting toothpaste on my teeth. Once you close your mouth, you may have a slight aftertaste from the gel, but nothing to worry about.

My Results:

Reader, I’m not going to lie to you: the whole time I was thinking, “This is doing absolutely nothing. My teeth will look exactly the same.” I am happy to say I was surprisingly wrong. I hadn’t looked at my before picture during the process, and today looking at my before and after, I am shocked by the results. My teeth are definitely whiter, and my stains have diminished a bit. My top teeth especially shine like diamonds now. This product is so easy to use, doesn’t make my teeth hurt, AND I saw major results! Arc, I am sold. Thank you for your work!

The post I Used a Teeth Whitening Pen Every Day For a Week—Here Are My Results appeared first on The Everygirl.

Confession: I hate taking off mascara more than I hate most things. The sticky, messy task has NEVER been worth it for me—until the Thrive mascara entered the picture.

For me, wearing makeup has always been about covering up my skin. I used eye and lip makeup to occasionally accentuate other features, but my face was always the main attraction. Last year, however, I successfully completed a bout of isotretinoin (a super strong acne medication)—and I now finally feel comfortable and confident enough in my appearance to experiment with my makeup.

That being said, it was the perfect time to embrace my lashes and find a mascara that did everything I needed it to. Here, I share my full, unfiltered thoughts on one of the most viral makeup products of our generation.

About the Mascara

The award-winning Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara from Thrive Causemetics makes a bold claim: to create the look of lash extensions, without the ACTUAL lash extensions. It also claims to enhance your own natural lash health, all in an easy-to-remove formula that leaves you free of flakes, smudges, or clumps.

The product comes in both black and brown/black, costs $24 per tube, and is vegan. Added bonus: for every purchase, Thrive donates to a woman in need.

My Experience

Like I said, I’m a lash purist. My natural lashes are pretty short and straight, but I’ve never loved caking on product just to essentially scrape it off 12 hours later. (Plus, I have allergies, so I’m constantly rubbing and scratching my eyes.)

In the past, my favorite mascara has always been the Milk Makeup Kush Mascara. It doesn’t provide much by way of length, but it’s highly volumizing and holds a curl well. Unfortunately, it’s a bit flaky, but it’s easy to remove.

I heard about the wonders of the Thrive mascara through a few friends and other publications (and through my mom, who was desperate to try it herself). Though somewhat loyal to the Milk variation, I decided to give it a purchase (and my mom bought one too!).

Note: Since first purchasing, I’ve been using GrandeLash MD for lash growth, and the lash serum has been a gamechanger for my natural lashes. Read a full review of it here.

First Impression

The product felt more liquid-y than other formulas (I could even tell that just by pumping the wand), and the way it stuck onto the wand itself felt promising for the way it would stick to my lashes. The wand, made with super short bristles, was easy to maneuver right from the get-go—but the lack of long, brush-like bristles gave me pause (compared to the Kush Mascara wand, it felt very thin and uninspiring). Note: I now realize the “thin and uninspiring” type of wand is much better for reaching corner lashes.

Ease of Application: 8/10

I like to curl my lashes first—so after a quick pump with my curler, I immediately add a first coat of this mascara. My lashes are so naturally straight that I like to open the tube, quickly curl, and then waste ZERO time before applying—but this product is pretty sticky, so you can’t rush too much. I curl, then apply one thin coat. While allowing the first side to dry, I curl and apply on the other side, then repeat once or twice as necessary.

Length: 9.5/10

There’s no denying that this mascara creates some serious length. My short, stumpy lashes were noticeably lengthened past what I’m used to, and the easy-to-handle wand makes it VERY easy to get into the corners of your eyes (like I said, that’s the benefit of the stump bristles!). For anyone who likes to curl their lashes before adding mascara, I recommend it—it definitely helps act as a ~glue~ to keep the curl intact.

Volume: 5/10

The mascara doesn’t add much volume, so anyone with naturally sparse lashes might feel a bit spidery with the spaced-out length this mascara provides.

Wearability: 8.5/10

The concept of this is so innovative—the “tubing technology” creates length on every single individual lash. That being said, though, when you think about it, the process of adding a “tube” of mascara to each single lash is not without its faults. It’s a sticky, wet formula, so it requires more drying time than other options I’ve tried—AND the lashes can stick to each other, both side to side and top to bottom (If you sneeze right after application, you are absolutely screwed).

Removal: 5/10

Additionally, those tiny individual “lash tubes” need to come off somehow, and while Thrive lists a simple method for removal (they say you don’t even need makeup remover), I personally think it’s very difficult. It’s a long process to put on (factoring in drying time) and a long process to take off.

The Final Verdict:

Overall, I give the Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara a solid 7.2/10. It’s perfect for extreme length but doesn’t create much drama or volume (When I’m going for a fuller look, I still stick to the Milk Kush Mascara). The Thrive mascara also takes some practice to effectively remove—but if you think the added length is worth the hassle, you’ll be pleased. While the final product can look a bit too thinned-out, it truly offers the look of lash extensions without the price tag or trip to the salon.

Abigail’s Favorite Lash Products

The post I Hate Mascara—But This One Completely Changed My Mind appeared first on The Everygirl.

I have heard of quite a few “game-changing” beauty products and ended up being very disappointed by them, so I was pretty skeptical of the famed Augustinus Bader Cream.  Whenever I hear someone talking about The Cream, it is usually with reverence, and words like “life-changing,” “miracle cream,” and “holy grail” are thrown around. At $265+ a bottle, it fell firmly in the splurge category for me, yet I was intrigued enough to look into the brand, shove my skepticism aside, and order a bottle.

Augustinus Bader

The Cream

Rooted in groundbreaking stem-cell technology, the cream is designed to trigger your existing stem cells to repair and renew your skin.

I am definitely a maximalist when it comes to my skincare routine, and I tend to mix high-end skincare with drugstore options, yet everything I read suggested that if I just washed my face and applied The Cream twice a day, I would see amazing results in 27 days. It’s supposed to completely balance your skin, minimize pores, reduce fine lines and remove dark spots (my biggest concern).

I tend to mix high-end skincare with drugstore options, yet everything I read suggested that if I just washed my face and applied The Cream twice a day, I would see amazing results in 27 days.

My skin tends to be normal and does well with just about anything I throw at it, but by day #5, my skin was not happy. It felt congested and dry, looked dull, and I would catch myself wanting to grab a face mist or oil throughout the day to help add some moisture back into my skin. By day #7, I ditched The Cream and went back to my full routine thinking that this cream was just a $265 mistake, but determined to find a way to incorporate it into my routine.

Going back to my initial research, I realized that the key to The Cream lies in the science behind it. The brand was founded by Professor Augustinus Bader, a globally recognized biomedical scientist and physician-scientist who researches stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. Through his work, he developed a wound gel that helps burn survivors heal quicker and without the need for surgery of skin grafts. That science is what he used to create TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex 8), the primary cocktail of ingredients in The Cream that promotes the regeneration of cells and the repair of fine lines, dark spots, and pores. In order to work, TFC8 needs to be the first thing applied to clean skin but it does not need to be the last. So, I tried it again for 27 days, applying it to my skin after cleansing and used a non-active serum, moisturizer, or oil on top.

I really wish I could say that I don’t love this moisturizer, but after 27 days, my skin glowed, my skin tone evened out, and everything just looked firmer. The major selling point for me though, was when I aggressively stress-picked my face one night and I barely had a scar a few days later. I also had two friends with different skin types (oily and dry) try out The Cream, and they also noticed positive changes in their skin.

The Final Verdict

Final verdict: it is worth the hype, to the point that I would seriously consider re-purchasing it during a sale and incorporating it into my routine a couple of times a week. That being said, it’s definitely going to be out of the budget for many, and I strongly believe that no beauty product is worth jeopardizing your rent, mortgage, or credit score over.

Thankfully, there are so many great affordable products out there, so I found a couple of options that can help you achieve similar results without breaking the bank.

Weleda

Skin Food Original Ultra- Rich Body Cream

There is a reason beauty editors will not shut up about this drugstore moisturizer. It is the perfect moisturizer if your skin is dry or dehydrated, and it’s an easy way to give your skin an extra glow. I also love to use it when I’ve used too many acids and my skin barrier has been compromised, as it is so soothing, it feels like a gentle hug.

Farmacy

Honey Halo Ultra-Hydrating Ceramide Moisturizer

If you are looking to lock in as much moisture as possible into your skin, I have to recommend this moisturizer. It is no secret that honey is extremely hydrating and moisturizing, but this formula also has fig fruit extract, which binds moisture into the skin while also plumping and reducing fine lines. Finally, ceramides and shea butter help keep that moisture in your skin. It is a bit thicker, so I usually use it at night and wake up with the softest and smoothest skin.

Heritage

Store Rosewater Moisturizer

The Rosewater Mist has been a cult-favorite for a while, but soothing gel moisturizer is perfect for days when I need some hydration but don’t want to use a heavier cream. It works well with sensitive skin and with the addition of niacinamide it helps reduce inflammation and the appearance of pores. I also really like using the Rose Oil at night, as 2-3 drops patted into the skin is all I need to lock moisture in and have dewy, glowing skin.

First Aid Beauty

Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration

Whenever I think about a rich moisturizer that will play well with all skin types, this cream is near the top of the list. It immediately hydrates the skin and absorbs quickly with no greasy feel while also working to calm down any redness and irritation that your skin is experiencing. It’s also an easy way to make your skin appear plump, even, and bouncy.

Laneige

Hypoallergenic Cica Sleeping Mask

I know this is not a moisturizer, but a sleeping mask that you apply as a thick cream just before bed is close enough. It works while you sleep to soothe, strengthen your moisture barrier, and hydrate your skin so that you wake up with a moisturized complexion.

The Inkey List

Retinol Anti-Aging Serum

A lot of what the Bader cream treats like scarring, dark spots, skin texture, dullness, and fine lines and wrinkles, can also be treated with retinol. This one doesn’t break the bank or require a prescription, is gentle enough to be used daily, and won’t dry your skin out as much as other retinols. I would still recommend following it up with a moisturizer, but it is a great way to get all the benefits at an affordable price. Read this if you're new to retinol.

Topicals

Faded Brightening & Clearing Gel

This serum gel has been everywhere recently and for good reason. I initially got it to help get rid of maskne, but it is formulated with niacinamide and exfoliating acids which helps reduce the appearance of scars and even out skin tone. Over the past few months, it has been what I reach for when I know that I might be left with a scar or dark spot on my skin that I want to get rid of fast.

Full disclosure: I am a sucker for any wellness, beauty, and health trend I find on Instagram. From CBD to celery juice to B12 shots, I’ve tried it all (and if I haven’t yet, I probably plan to). There have been ones that have now been incorporated into my approaches to beauty and wellness. There have also been ones that I could definitely live without. Over the past few months, I have noticed the increase in influencers, bloggers, and models getting lymphatic drainage massages to detoxify their bodies. Honestly, I was skeptical at first that a massage could do all that it claimed to help with. After contemplating it for a while and doing my research, I finally decided to give it a try.

I made an appointment at a local massage and healing center near me. I made sure that the masseuse was proficient in lymphatic drainage massages. Before the massage, I discussed some of the issues I was having with her and she explained how this treatment would help. The biggest reason I went in was that I suffer from chronic back pain from a prior sports injury that flares up a few times a year, making it hard to stand and walk. She went over what to expect and we talked about the method she uses. The initial process of the massage is just like any other massage: you get undressed and lay on a heated table. After that, don’t expect a deep tissue massage, because it’s nothing like that! She used light, repetitive strokes focusing on my arms, armpits, stomach, back, and legs. When the massage was over, I rested and drank a lot of water as I was directed to.

A couple of days after the massage, I felt like I had an extra pep in my step. I was able to work out with no pain and my body felt like it was given a boost of energy. I noticed that the water weight around my midsection had gone down and I was no longer bloated. Overall, the inflammation in my body was gone, and I felt like my body was finally in a comfortable, content state that moved with ease. I’m not saying this massage was the answer to all my problems, but I will definitely be adding it to my health routine a few times a year! Keep reading to learn more about what a lymphatic drainage massage is and if it could benefit you.

What does the lymphatic system do?

The lymphatic system consists of lymph vessels, ducts, nodes, and other tissues, and is located underneath the skin. Think of its function kind of like the garbage disposal of the body (gross analogy, I know): it gets rid of “waste” in the body, whether it’s toxins, bacteria, or excess fluid. The lymph is a collection of the extra fluid that moves through the arteries and tissues to clean them out, before draining them through the lymphatic system.

However, there is no pump to push the lymph through the body, and it relies on our muscle action to maintain fluid movement. Therefore, any kind of manual “drainage” (I know, so much imagery about that garbage disposal) is said to work by moving the lymph to the lymph nodes to eliminate the toxins and bacteria. While there is some controversy around the massage style, this system is crucial to the body’s health, and stimulating it through methodical massage could have many benefits.

What is a lymphatic drainage massage?

A lot more people are incorporating this massage into their health and wellness routines. You can find directions online on how to give yourself this massage, but I recommend going to a licensed therapist who is trained in lymphatic drainage massage for a proper treatment.

A lymphatic drainage massage uses very light pressure and long, rhythmic strokes that get the lymph fluid moving and directs the toxins into the organs that can properly remove them. A trained practitioner’s hands can simply apply pressure to re-stimulate the natural contractions of the lymphatic system. This will move the stagnant fluid back into the natural lymph flow of the body.

What are the benefits?

The relaxing practice is often used to treat acne, cellulite, digestive issues, puffiness, stress, inflammation, insomnia, migraines, and certain health complications, but that’s not all. A lymphatic drainage massage is also commonly used for its ability to:

  • Fight off infection
  • Speed up healing and recovery from the cold and flu
  • Reduce water retention
  • Boost weight loss
  • Improve cellulite, skin swelling, scar tissue, acne, and stretch marks
  • Reduce stress and fatigue
  • Help with post-exercise recovery

When should I do it?

Everyone can benefit from getting a lymphatic drainage massage with the change of the seasons. This is because with each season we are eating different foods, our level of activity is changing, and the change in weather can affect the body’s internal processes. When you’re ever feeling extra bloated would be a great time to receive the treatment, as it helps to reduce water retention. But bottom line, every body is different, so if you suffer from any of the listed symptoms and feel like a lymphatic drainage massage would help, I suggest meeting with a trained professional to discuss a schedule that would be good for your body. You can also DIY in the comfort of your own home using a dry brush, tool, or just your hands as a relaxing ritual before bed or a practice to keep you calm and energized throughout the day.

Other tips

  • Drink plenty of water before and after your massage, as it can cause you to become dehydrated
  • It’ll leave you feeling pretty exhausted, so you’ll want to take it easy for the rest of the day
  • I suggest stripping down to as little clothing as possible (that you feel comfortable with) so the masseuse can do the treatment most effectively
