October 2019

As much as I love to be a productive, working gal, I also love sleep. The thought of getting to snooze my alarm for an extra 30 minutes (or gasp, an entire hour — I did that this morning, TBH) truly makes my heart skip a beat. There’s nothing like sleeping in just the smallest amount. Sometimes, I even set my alarm earlier just for the sole purpose of hitting snooze. However, as we’ve discussed multiple times previously, my oilier-than-average hair doesn’t like to go more than a day between washes. While I can make do (ha, get it, hairdo? Please laugh, I’m going through a rough time) with top knots and messy buns and half-up ponytails, after a while, it’s just obvious that my hair is dirty and I had no other choice but to put it up.

That’s where dry shampoo comes in. I remember the first time I tried a dry shampoo and thinking, “This is it. This is happiness.” I went into a deep love affair with dry shampoo, and I went through about a bottle every few weeks. I was honestly love-drunk on the idea that my hair could look good without having to be washed (and also probably a little real drunk on all those aerosol fumes).

I quickly learned, however, that not all dry shampoo is created equal, and once I got my hands on good dry shampoo, it made using the bad stuff feel like I was putting nothing on my hair. In hopes of finding the good stuff — no white marks, no gross smell, and makes my hair actually feel clean rather than mask the oil — I’ve tried what feels like everything on the market, and I have some opinions to share.

Just a few things to know about me: I have very fine, blonde, short-ish hair that is dry on the ends and oily at the roots. Now, onto my ranking:

6th place

IGK

First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

I thought this would be my absolute favorite. IGK is a little more expensive, and their packaging is to die for. All of their products get amazing reviews, so I thought if I finally splurged on this dry shampoo, all my hair woes would magically end.

Noooope.

This dry shampoo was probably one of the worst I’ve ever tried. I don’t know if I was using it incorrectly, but it just didn’t seem to do anything. It didn’t soak up any oil, it didn’t give me any volume. I also didn’t really love the scent. So, I was left with hair that was still greasy, still flat, and smelled bad. Not exactly what I was going for.

5th place

Batiste

Original Dry Shampoo - Clean & Classic

f this wasn’t the first dry shampoo you ever tried, what kind of elite are you?!? (I’m sure you’re reading this on an iPhone 11 Pro Max *eye roll*) This is a classic in my book, and it’s what fueled my initial obsession with dry shampoo. With that, it also showed me that dry shampoo can be so much better. It definitely soaks up the oils of my hair, but it leaves a film that doesn’t actually make it feel clean. When I ran my fingers through my hair, I could feel the dry shampoo — yuck.

In a pinch (and on a budget), I don’t think you can go wrong with this dry shampoo, but there are definitely better ones out there.

4th place

Kristin Ess

Style Reviving Dry Shampoo

Kristin Ess might as well be another editor in our office. We’re obsessed with basically everything she comes out with. From scalp scrubs to hair accessories to hair tools (her 1 in. curling iron gives such great curls!), there aren’t many of her products that I haven’t loved. Her dry shampoo is a little cheaper than some of the other options on the market, so I figured it could be a good alternative to my favorites when I don’t want to drop the extra cash.

This dry shampoo is fine, but the best part is definitely the classic Kristin Ess scent. I’d buy it again for that alone.

3rd place

Living Proof

Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

This is the #1 dry shampoo of the Everygirl office, so I knew I had to try it when I first started working here. (What can I say, I like to fit in.) This one definitely made my hair feel clean, and it has much less of a white cast than others (which is why I can see our dark-haired editors preferring it!). The only reason I didn’t totally fall head over heels for this dry shampoo is the feeling it leaves in my hair and how dry it made my scalp. While I feel like this wicks up a lot of the oil and sweat in my hair (making it perfect for after the gym), it left my roots feeling itchy and dry after using it too often.

I’ll definitely keep this in my arsenal for when I need some serious oil-control, but otherwise, it’s not my favorite.

2nd place

Briogeo

Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo

I wanted to try this forever because I’m obsessed with pretty much everything I’ve tried from Briogeo. (Also, their founder is amazing!) This dry shampoo is a little different from all the others on this list because it’s a powder instead of a spray.

I thought this had a lot of good hold — I would definitely use this on a night out or if I was trying to give myself lots of volume. This dry shampoo, without a doubt, gave my hair the biggest look of all (a ~lewk~ if you will). However, I didn’t notice my hair feeling quite as clean as it did with my beloved #1 choice.

1st place

Klorane

Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

The moment I tried this felt like true love. I bought a mini at Anthropologie when my hair was looking particularly disgusting (I swear I love myself), and I was in awe at how clean my hair looked and felt. I’ve been purchasing this dry shampoo for about two years now, and I honestly get annoyed with myself every time I deviate from what I know to be good and true.

While the world is buzzing over “~riiiseeee ‘n shiineee~”, I’m going to remind everyone of when Kylie Jenner’s makeup practically broke Instagram in approximately 2014. I remember immediately running to MAC to buy Kylie’s signature brown lip shade. Then, next thing I knew, I was wearing tattoo chokers, high-neck tank tops, and high-waisted jeans. The ’90s were in full swing. I’m not trying to say Kylie Jenner is to blame, but her Instagram gave us a lot more than Stormi videos, that’s for sure. Although Kylie’s signature shade is now in the form of her own liquid lipsticks, classic ’90s makeup is dominating runways, street style, magazines, and more. I can’t scroll through my Instagram feed without seeing a metallic or glitter eye look (thanks, Euphoria!), dark nude lips, and smooth, satin skin. So, how exactly do those trends translate into real life? Here are all the top trends, plus, our secrets to wearing them from the office to the club:

Natural-looking skin

A flawless complexion that didn’t look like you were wearing pounds of makeup was the goal for women in the ’90s, and the same look was achieved across runways (such as Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, and Balmain) with a little bit of a twist. Instead of matte skin that cracks and looks cakey, the focus is put on a natural-skin finish. Get the look by layering products in thin layers instead of overloading on product and coverage in one go. Use a light moisturizer first, then a thin layer of a medium-coverage foundation, concealer to spot conceal, and then set with a powder. Along with natural skin, the “no-makeup” makeup look is totally ’90s. Try this look first, and then add these other trends on top — this ensures nothing goes too over-the-top (unless that’s the look you’re going for, which is honestly a look on its own!).

Charlotte Tilbury

Airbrush Flawless Longwear Foundation

This foundation is the true form of a satin/natural finish. It gives a flawless coverage without getting cakey or looking dry on parched, winter skin.

Covergirl

TruBlend Matte Made Liquid Foundation

This is the easiest way to hack a natural finish if you have oily skin. While it might be a little drying for someone on the other end of the spectrum, it provides a skin-like finish for those who are trying to keep oils at bay.

Lancome

Skin Feels Good Nourishing Foundation

If you're looking for something with a satin/matte finish that won't dry out your skin (AKA perfect for the fall and winter), this is a great option to try!

Fenty Beauty

Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting Powder

If you want a matte, pore-free look, this is the powder for you. It blurs the skin like nothing else I've ever tried without leaving you looking cakey or feeling heavy on the skin. You can also dust it lightly across the face just to set your foundation in place.

Maybelline

Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder

This powder does the job of pricier formulas for less than half the price. Use this to mattify dewy foundations or set your makeup for the day.

Natural blush

Dewy blushes in bright shades were everywhere last summer, but this season, we’re opting for natural blush looks that complement both those natural, no-makeup looks and fun, shimmery eyes. To get the ’90s look, go for something close to your skin tone, whether that’s a peach, a neutral mauve, or a dark brown.

Nudestix

Nudies Matte Blush & Bronze

If you want to keep your natural, radiant-finish on the skin, these cream blushes do the trick. They never look heavy or cakey the way a powder might, and they blend into the cheeks like nothing. The shades are all super wearable too, so you really can't go wrong with any of them!

Burt's Bees

Blush with Vitamin E

Burt's Bees blushes are one of the best formulas at the drugstore, and the shades are perfect for a natural blush look.

Wet looking eyes: @bodyography is always it!

A post shared by Katie Jane Hughes (@katiejanehughes) on

Metallic eyeshadow

Metallic eyelids that shine in the light are the ’90s equivalent to the warm, smokey eye of the early 2010s. They’re easy AF, they use only a few shades, and anyone can pull them off. Simply swipe a metallic shade across the lid — it’s seriously that easy! Make it extra glam for a night out by wetting your brush beforehand, or opt for an intense cream or liquid shadow. Want to go full Euphoria? Glitter isn’t just for festivals and New Year’s Eve anymore. Try wearing glitter as a liner, in the center of the eyelid, or in the inner corners to get a light glitter look without looking like you’re heading to a rave.

Milk Makeup

Eye Pigment

A cream eyeshadow is a great way to get super high intensity, and these eye pigments seriously do the trick. Swipe one of these across the lid, and you're good for the entire day (or night!).

Inc.redible

Lid Slick Eye Pigment

These eyeshadows are no joke when it comes to pigment and shine. To get the look of an eye gloss without all the mess and creasing, add one of these to your lids. The shimmers are so reflective that it makes your lids look wet!

Nudestix

Magnetic Eye Color

For the gal on the go, these Nudestix pencils are a lifesaver. Both the satin and matte versions make a simple smokey eye when smudged across the lid and lower lash line.

Covergirl

Exhibitionist Liquid Glitter Shadow

If Daisy Buchanan lived in 2019, she would own every shade of these glitter eyeshadows. They're the sophisticated way to wear glitter on the eyes. Not to mention, they last forever — holiday parties, here I come.

Glossier

Glitter Gelee

These glitters are suspended in a paste that glides evenly over the lids or inner corner of the eyes without getting everywhere like a loose glitter would. Glitter tech in 2019 is everything.

Matte smokey eyes

I know we just talked about Kylie Jenner, but KKW’s classic matte smokey eyes are what ’90s-supermodel-makeup dreams are made of. (They’re so classic that she made an entire ’90s collection based on it for her makeup line!) This look is back this season. From the Tom Ford runway to magazine pages to Pinterest, smokey eyes are getting an elevated upgrade with matte cool tone shades and smudged out grundgey eyeliner. This tutorial makes the basic matte smokey eye so easy, but if you want to take it up a notch, run a black eyeliner across the upper lash line and smoke it out with a pencil or smudge brush. This gives that “bedroom eye” effect. The 1990s classic smokey eye isn’t supposed to be perfect either, so go to town with blending and smudging the product out to create a grungey look. Final touches: your Doc Martens and Nirvana band tee.

Urban Decay

Naked2 Basics Eyeshadow Palette

This could basically be called a matte smokey eye for beginners. The shades blend together easily, and the colors are perfect for daytime looks at work to sexy smokey eyes for date night.

KKW Beauty

Matte Smoke Palette

Just looking at this palette makes me want to create a smokey eye. Kim K really brought out all the stops with cool browns, navy, black, and grey, all in one palette. Her formula is easy to blend too, making it perfect to create grungey looks.

Milk Makeup

Long Wear Gel Eyeliner

This eyeliner is amazing for smudging along the lash line because it already comes with a smudge tool on the other end. It's also creamy when you first apply it, but it dries down and stays all day. I own it in black and brown, and it's become my favorite eyeliner.

Dark nude lips

You can’t think about ’90s makeup without thinking about the supermodel, dark lip colors donned by Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. While light nudes for lighter skin tones are all over the market, it’s not as easy to find them for darker skin tones, especially in varying undertones.

Huda Beauty

Power Bullet Matte Lipstick

There are dozens of shades within this line, from gorgeous reds to nudes for every skin tone. Opt for one shade darker than your skin tone to get the true '90s brown lip.

The Lip Bar

Vegan Lipstick

The Lip Bar has amazing lip products in all shades. "Cocoa Cooler" and "Chocolate Spritzer" are great nudes for medium to dark skin tones!

Fresh

Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 in "Honey"

If you want the brown lip look without going for a heavy lip color, you can't go wrong with this nude shade of an already cult-classic lip balm.

NYX

Suede Matte Lip Liner

These lip liners are so creamy that they double as a full lip color. Swipe it across the lip line and fill in to create a complete look. You can add a gloss to make it 2019, or blot your lips with a tissue to keep the look matte all day long.

The post ’90s Makeup is Back—Here Are the Products You Need to Rock the Trend appeared first on The Everygirl.

With self-care seemingly being all anyone can talk about in recent years, it can be extremely easy to get overwhelmed with all the things you should be doing, buying, and applying to your daily life in order to keep up. While we heavily advocate for spending quality time bettering both your inside and out, we definitely don’t believe you have to put a strain on your budget in order to maximize the benefits of pampering yourself.

One of the very best aspects of skincare is that it has absolutely nothing to do with the dollar amount of each product — what’s more important is the ritual of the process. It’s 10 minutes of your morning and nightly routine that is a non-negotiable moment to be present with yourself; a time to focus, recenter, and take care of no one else but you.

Drugstore skincare has come a long way over the last few years, so we found our favorite products that make a difference on a budget. These are the best products to get you started on your morning and evening mirror meditations.

Evening Routine

Step One: Oil Cleanse

Neutrogena

Ultra-Light Face Cleansing Oil

Oil cleansing is arguably one of the most important — albeit misunderstood — steps in a complete routine. This long-time Neutrogena staple melts down from a slippery oil into a milky cleanser as it dissolves every last bit of your daily makeup, SPF, sweat, and grime.

Step Two: Water Cleanse

Garnier

SkinActive Soothing Milk Face Wash

The perfect follow-up to your oil cleanse, this rose-water-infused hydrating formula lifts away the residue left behind from your first wash without stripping the skin of all its natural oils — all while ensuring not a stitch of makeup is left behind.

Step Three: Toner

L'Oreal Paris

HydraFresh Toner

In order to adequately moisturize your skin, you need to incorporate products whose nourishing ingredients feature different molecular weights and viscosities — which is why a hydrating liquid toner is extremely important! This formula is 99 percent alcohol-free and glycerin-based, meaning it acts more as a moisturizer rather than an astringent.

Step Four: Serum

Frudia

Citrus Brightening Serum

Finding a drugstore brightening serum that was anywhere reasonably priced used to be damn near impossible, but with the emergence of K-Beauty onto our drugstore shelves, we thankfully can achieve a healthier and more youthful glow without forking over a ton of cash. This particular product is gentle enough to be used in the morning and evening.

Step Five: Moisturizer

Simple

Replenishing Rich Facial Moisturizer

Having a moisturizer that is effective enough to keep your skin hydrated overnight, as well as function under makeup the next day is key when keeping the purse strings tight on a skincare budget. Thankfully, this fuss-free light lotion from Simple can accomplish just that.

Step Six: Night Cream

Burt's Bees

Intense Hydration Night Cream

Now that you’ve layered on your various potions, it's time to ensure that they stay sealed in place to work their magic while you rest. This Burt’s Bees Night Cream is all-natural, probiotic infused, and delivers deep moisture while not being too tacky or thick.

Morning Routine

Step Six: Sunscreen

Neutrogena

Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion

Upon waking, you can repeat all the aforementioned products in the same order (skipping the night cream, obviously) but be sure to add the most critical one of them all: SPF. Daily sun protection is the #1 rule in all of skincare, and this light gel formula by Neutrogena is so refreshing and easy to wear under makeup that you won’t feel like sunscreen is such a chore anymore.

The post Your Complete Drugstore Skincare Routine for Under $100 appeared first on The Everygirl.

Anyone who has sensitive skin knows how scary it can be — innocently trying a product that your friends claimed changed their lives can change yours in the wrong way and make your face red, inflamed, and flakey.

As someone with life-long, impossibly sensitive skin, I know the game well — adding both makeup and skincare products to my routine one at a time so I know who’s to blame if one irritates me, the word “rash” being a part of my daily vocabulary (I quite literally had a rash on my face for a full year of college and eliminated everything from my skincare routine before finding out it was actually caused by a tomato allergy — fun!) — it’s a chore.

After 23 years of trying new products and waiting for my face to spontaneously combust immediately after (and with the help of my dermatologist), I’ve learned some ins and outs of which products are most likely to make my face hate me. Gentle cleanser? Great. Abrasive exfoliator? That’ll take me days to bounce back from.

If you too are plagued with sensitive skin, try eliminating these ingredients first: your skin will thank you.

1. Fragrance

Many skincare products contain fragrance to mask less-pleasant scents that some ingredients have, but even if an added fragrance is natural, it can anger sensitive skin (and was the first ingredient my dermatologist advised me to steer clear of when I complained to him about my skin flare-ups).

While the FDA requires ingredients used in skincare products to be disclosed on a label, fragrance only needs to be listed as “fragrance”, not as the ingredients within the scent. Since fragrances are mixtures of both natural and chemical ingredients, if a product is heavily scented, it could contain harsh chemicals that aren’t clearly disclosed — and can irritate all skin, whether it’s considered sensitive or not.

When you’re looking for fragrance-free products, make sure to pay attention to “fragrance-free” labels versus “unscented” ones. “Fragrance-free” usually means that no additional scents were added to the product, while “unscented” means that an ingredient was added to mask the smell of the product.

2. Essential Oils

San-Francisco skincare specialist Kristina Holey told The New York Times, “Some constituents of certain essential oils, like those in bergamot, are transformed into chemicals and enzymes when exposed to sunlight, which can induce a photo-allergic response,” after she investigated why so many of her patients were complaining about inflamed skin.

Tea tree, mint, citrus, and lavender oils should be used carefully or avoided completely. Tea tree oil can be safe for skin in diluted doses, but many acne products that contain amounts of tea tree oil that can lead to dryness and irritation. Mint, citrus, and lavender oils all can cause irritation and negative reactions to the skin.

3. Chemical sunscreens

There are two types of sunscreen: mineral and chemical. Mineral sunscreens have two active ingredients, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which work by physically blocking UV rays (which is why they’re often referred to as “physical sunscreen”). Chemical sunscreens contain a variety of chemicals, which absorb UV light and release it as heat after a chemical reaction takes place.

Chemical sunscreen have many more active ingredients than mineral versions, which makes the likelihood of irritating sensitive skin higher. Dr. Anjali Mahto told Harper’s Bazaar that mineral sunscreens may be “better for the skin than chemical sunscreens, especially if you’re prone to acne or other skin ailments.”

What to use instead

4. Harsh exfoliants

If you have skin that’s easily irritated, using an exfoliator that is too abrasive can cause your skin to be immediately inflamed. Although you shouldn’t avoid exfoliating completely — it’s vital to removing dead skin cells and getting that glow — opting for gentler versions is essential in avoiding in any skin flare-ups.

Because both physical exfoliators (like scrubs) and chemical exfoliators (like acids) are relatively harsh on the skin, using gentler types less frequently can exfoliate while avoiding any unwanted effects. Lactic acid is a good option for sensitive skin because it doesn’t penetrate as deeply as other acids.

What to use instead

5. Sodium Lauryl Sulfates

Jonathan Van Ness has us all swearing off sulfates in our shampoo, but they also linger in some skin cleansers and sunscreens, which — you guessed it — can be detrimental to sensitive skin. While they aren’t the cancer-causing monsters they’re made out to be, they can still be on the list of ingredients that can be the culprit of skin irritation.

What to use instead

6. Alcohol

Don’t panic, I’m not talking about your nightly glass of wine. Products that contain alcohol (like many astringents) can dry out skin and affect how it rejuvenates itself, which can be a death sentence to sensitive skin. Triple-check that none of your products contain denatured alcohol.

The post 6 Skincare Ingredients to Avoid If You Have Sensitive Skin appeared first on The Everygirl.

My coffee mugs are constantly covered in lipstick. My coworkers? Not as much. While I love to swipe on bright, vampy, red, and pink shades throughout the year, I know I fall into the minority who feels naked without a lip color. Fall, however, is the one time of the year everyone gets on my side. Our office fills with dark browns, our favorite nudes for our skin tones, burgundy, holiday red, orange, and more — and let me tell you, I live for it every time.

Now that PSL-drinking-leaf-jumping-sweater-wearing-pumpkin-picking season is officially upon us (OMG FINALLY RIGHT?!?!), we’re ready to grab our favorite lip colors once again. We pulled from our makeup collections to try out new shades (you can never go wrong with a little makeup swap between friends!) and reminisce on old favorites. Below, you can see how they looked on, what we think about them, and where you can shop for similar fall hues. Happy swatching!

Jouer

High Pigment Lip Gloss in "Bond"

I fell in love with these lip glosses a few months back, and I'm so happy to have one in a deeper shade. Since it's on the dark side, I would typically put a lip liner under it to make the staying power even longer and to hold it in place. For a gloss, this has so much pigment, and it lasts for quite a long time — I wore this for about five or six hours before I felt like I needed to reapply. It also wears off so gracefully; it doesn't take away all the moisture of your lips, and it definitely doesn't settle in any lines. Love, love, love.

MAC

Lipstick in "Among the Fireflies"

Since childhood, I’ve always sort of been scared of lipstick. While all other girls I knew would be leaning over their moms’ dressers admiring them put on their rouge, 5-year-old me would be freaking out about how you could possibly take all that color off to go back to your natural look (overthinking has been my forte since a young age). BUT, as I’ve grown up a bit, I’ve realized that darker shades aren’t the only ways to add a bit of a pop to your face to help it come alive. I’d still say I’m working on becoming more comfortable putting on shades of lipstick that deviate from my natural tone, which is why I feel that this shade is a perfect everyday color for fall! It’s subtle enough to wear during the day, while still being pigmented enough to build up to wear at night. It’s formula is creamy and moisturizing with a good amount of sheen, and although it might fade a little bit over the course of several hours, the moisture still stays locked in. I can definitely see myself reaching for this color throughout the season!

Maybelline

SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color in "Seductress"

As I applied this lip color, Beth and I were laughing because it was almost identical to the color of my lips — which it does not look like in the tube. BUT this is a perfect, your-lips-but-better color for fall. I'm not a super big lipstick girl, but this was super comfortable and stayed on all day. When I saw my mom later in the day while wearing this, the first thing she asked me was what lipstick I was wearing. 10/10 from me.

Bianca

Mented Cosmetics

Semi-Matte Lipstick in "Foxy Brown"

My new favorite fall lip is actually one that is pretty subtle, but I love it because it's my perfect nude; which used to be challenging to find. It's called Foxy Brown by Mented. I also love this lip color because it's matte but moisturizing, and stays in place even after coffee. Not to mention, I can apply it without a mirror on the go without fear it will dry down uneven. Since going nude can sometimes make my skin tone look flat, I like to add a blush (I'm wearing the Lip Bar's Fresh Glow in Bubble Bath) to my cheeks to make me look alive. One more pro-tip for darker skin ladies that may have darkness around their lips and chins like me is to apply a little concealer around the mouth to even out that area. It's a small step that makes a big difference for me.

Flower Beauty

Petal Pout Lip Color in "Wild Berry"

It is very rare that you'll see me with a lip color on — if ANYTHING, I like a casual pink gloss that almost exactly matches my skin (can you say "daredevil"?). I've always thought a bold, deep lip during the colder months is PAINFULLY chic — but have also always feared that I just ~ don't have the face for it ~. Office makeup guru Beth helped me pick out this shade — and while you may not see me rocking it on a casual Tuesday, I think it's a perfect way to amp up my cocktail attire for the upcoming holiday season.

Kylie Cosmetics

Liquid Velvet Lipstick in "Savage"

I’m obsessed with all things Kylie Cosmetics, especially her velvet liquid lipstick formula. I usually love to just wear a pink-nude color (her Bare shade is my go-to), but I love this darker orangey nude for fall! It’s super long-wearing and comfortable, and not drying like some of the matte formulas can be.

NARS

Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in "Cruella"

I have yet to find a lipstick that stays on my mouth all day, but these pencils come real close. I generally prefer a pencil to a traditional bullet lipstick — pencils are drier and thus get me a few more hours (no melting in sight). The NARS Velvet Matte version is my favorite — it genuinely looks like velvet once applied and has a super rich pigment so you get a true bold lip and not just a whisper of color. The pigment fades throughout the day, but in a gentle way, so you end up with kind of a sexy stain after a few hours. I am deeply influenced by product names and this color is called "Cruella" so I, of course, bought it sight unseen from Sephora's website and boy did it not disappoint. 11/10 would recommend.
